found a fungus

but not photographed it yet!!
looks like velvet shank only without the stalks and gills, and it's the same kind of texture as jews ear, but not dark enough to be jews ear. nor is it growing on a birch tree. it's growing out of the path behind my garden fence.

any idea?[/url]

hmm, could do with a photo really. It does not sound like an edible fungus. Where did you hear about Jew's ear growing on Birch? I have always found it on Elder. Is it still there? how about a photo.

finally got round to getting a photo....

can't take a spore print 'cos it doesn't appear to have any gills, it's just really interesting.

and the birch thing was from a mushroom website.

It's a cup fungus, and there are several different ones but it's most likely to be Peziza repanda. Inedible
