I would have thougt that a bit of emery cloth stuck on a flat piece of wood , would do the job

I've waited and waited with bated breath ...

Shoot me down in flames if you want, but a slight modification of the emery cloth idea might be better - wrap it around something shaped like a potato (for instance, a potato) and give it a few swipes. Okay, it's going to be topologically difficult, but then your favourite potato peeler has to be worth the efforst.

I have just tried this with one of the selection of blunt peelers we seem to collect in this menage, so I can confirt to works.

Sharpen using an ordinary metal nail file. Work along the inside edge slowly and then just run it a couple of times along outside (the peeling side) just to get the bur off. Took about 15 minutes to get a good edge.

I tried an emery board but the sand just came off.

I have just thought of one possibe solution, I have just remembered I have one of those drimmel machines with a whole collection of assorted drill bits, including, erm nice little miniature sharpening stones. Off to give that a go.

You could also try using those little tiny needle files

hmm I thought it worked, but it still seemed blunt, though it worked on many knifes that were beyond the butchers steel

But.....

I thought those things were designed to be self sharpening!
