We have rows of these in the hedges near our house but they never seem to produce fruit (apart from one tiny berry last year) - does anyone have an idea why this happens or if there is anything that could be done to make them fruit ?

Well - I never knew they existed. Apparently, they like a bit of air around them, so cutting out the old wood may help - note OLD wood only, because next year's crop will grow on this year's new wood. Everything I could find indicated that they ripen very unevenly, so you'll be picking all colours from green to black.
