Corks

This was emailed to me as a daily 'eco tip' from Friends of the Earth and I hadn't thought of it before so thought I'd share it. They suggest using corks in the bottom of plantpots instead of crocks; they encourage drainage and have the added benefit of making the pot ligher (useful if it's on a balcony, I suppose).

I've been feeding all mine to the dalek so far, but I'm going to try this from now on. (Any excuse to crack open a bottle, me...)

I did exactly that years and years ago when I didn't have a garden, but had a black currant bush in a large container on the balcony! Just need to make sure the wind can't get your rather-light pot... :?

Great idea! Another use for corks.
I don`t break sufficient `crocks` to put in pots!

I burn the real corks but this is a great idea for the plastic ones. I already use polystyrene in the bottom of my pots. Has the added advantage of insulating the bottom of the pot and protecting the roots from extremes of temperature.
