Fork! It's a new gardening magazine....

I have just finished making a website for urban gardeners, that I hope to update in 'issues' like a printed magazine, as this is how it originally began. If you have any suggestions or ideas for future issues please post them here or email me.

It also has an article about Andy, as I met him a while ago, and he made me a very nice cup of coffee! (I hope you like it, Andy!)

I present to you .... www.forkzine.co.uk .... a magazine for gardeners who aren't pansies, and who don't grow them either. 8)

What a good site. Well done. I enjoyed reading it.

How often do you expect to 'issue' it? Do you plan to keep back issues in an archive for future reference?

Just one small point; could you do it in a font size one up from x-small? My nose was getting quite close to the screen to read it, which may be to do with the size of my nose, and may be to do with creeping middle age, but a larger font may help me feel less old and ugly.

Thanks, Muddypause!

And it's not only you who mentioned the text size, so I'll have a look at the weekend. Anything I can do to make people feel young and sprightly!

I'm not sure how often to 'issue' it, maybe every 2 months? I suppose it will depend on how many people seem interested. I'd definitely archive the old articles, so maybe I need to stop thinking in issues and add articles as they come. Because it's an online version of a print version I made, it's a bit stuck between print and the web. I think for the next issue (which I'd design for the web) I'll have an overhaul of the layout and make it a bit more web friendly.

It looks really good - a great sense of space and some superb photo illustrations. One way of making the layout more web-orientated would be to give up on two columns of text and merge them into one - in a print magazine you're designing for a a fixed page but on the web it can be detrimental to make assumptions about the visitor's browser resolution and font-size.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you do with issue 2.

WOW !! How good is that - I'm totally impressed and will post the link on my green board on iVillage too.

I like the idea of adding articles as you get them - unless you email people to let them know when the next issue is online. I'd forget to check in without a reminder

I set my browser font to 'largest' so that I could read without pressing my nose against the screen.

Is the print version still going?

Thanks! It's taking off a bit now - had 300 visitors today. Thanks for posting it around the web. It's been blogged a bit too, which is very much appreciated to all that did that as well.

As it seems to be doing well, I'm working on a design that will mean articles can be added easily (whilst keeping the older ones there) and that is a bit more flexible with design, and consequently font size. Trying to adjust the size on the current one meant all the tables went crazy and I thought better to forge forward with a few tweaks for issue two! Sorry to everyone that finds it too small, I promise this will be better in the next issue.

If anyone would like an email when it's updated, please email me at editor@forkzine.co.uk, but I'll also post here when it's updated. The print version is currently abandoned, due to the expense vs the web. I'm not really a web designer, so I'd love to do the print one. I'll see what happens in the future....

Thanks everyone!

Well done so far mate. Yep good article, I do like it

I have noticed that is must be gaining some momentum as many of the visitors are being passed back our way too.

Cheers Andy :) Hope all is going well with you. I'm glad you like the article, and very glad people are coming to your site from it, as so they should! Hope Bristol's treating you well, and maybe catch up sometime.
