March is by far my favorite month of the year the daylight hours are getting longer and you can't start off your planting in earnest. March to me is the season of dreams for the coming season. You don't know what the summer month will offer, or if it will be a good or bad season but it is full of hope. It is also the first month (here in the UK) that you might be able to go out in your shirt sleeves, excellent.
There is still a risk of frost this month so planting outdoors will have to be approached with caution. First earlies (potatoes) should be ok, onions from sets, early carrots, celeriac, celery, parsnips, broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, radish, lettuce. Sucessional sow with lettuce and radishes or you will find that you have too much to eat and it will end up in compost. Sucessional sowing means sowing seed in intervals, so plant some now more next week and more the week after. Lettuce can also make good sacrificial crops for slugs plant them around other plants you want protected so that the slugs go for the lettuce and not your other plants.
You could also sow dill, chervil, parsley and sorrel in cloches or a greenhouse.
Indoor sowing can begin to give you a head start on the season. Ensure that your plant pots are disinfected to reduce any diseases that might have lingered from the precious year. Or use newspaper pots.
Sweetcorn, tomatoes, pepper plants, cabbage and peas can all be sown indoors. I would also be tempted to sow some courgette's, pumpkins, squashes and marrows towards the end of the month.
Clean up your plot. Clean greenhouse windows for maximum light. Divide chives and mint.
