The garden of the seers centre SEER Rockdust

After listening to a program on BBC Radio 4 about rockdust I decided that I would contact the SEER centre to tell us about the stuff, heres what they wrote.

What is SEER Rockdust?

SEER Rockdust is freshly crushed volcanic rock from Collace Quarry in Perthshire, Scotland.

This Rockdust contains 78+ minerals and trace elements which are used in the terraced gardens at The SEER Centre, along with compost, to remineralised the poor acidic soils. We have achieved great results using Rockdust and have successfully grown vegetables in our glen for the first time in 50 years.

How Does Rockdust Work?

SEER Rockdust boosts soil fertility to grow bigger, healthier, organic fruit, vegetables, flowers and lusher lawns. Rockdust is digested by earth-worms who deposit mineral-rich worm casts, thus increasing mineral availability, microbial activity and natural fertility of soil or compost. After initial application it can take weeks or months for microbial activity to increase and release nutrients to improve soil fertility.  It is not harmful to apply the maximum dose.  This will simply achieve a longer-lasting beneficial effect (up to 5 years) on fertility, plant vigour and yield.

Advice : SEER Rockdust will not increase fertility of sterile grow-bags. Worms and soil micro-organisms must be present to achieve the natural organic processes of soil 'remineralisation'.

SEER Rockdust can be used with organic soil conditioners and plant foods.  It contains a natural balance of lime:  Do not add lime or lime-rich products as too much lime will bind up the 78+ minerals.

SEER Rockdust? is a natural product and, as such, moisture content may vary but this will not affect the quality of the product.

Soil application : Apply at the start or end of the growing season.  Sprinkle evenly using a spade. Rake into the soil surface or let the worms do it for you. Minimum dose = 0.5 kg per sq. m. , bag contents cover up to 40 sq. m. Apply once a year. Maximum dose = 5 kg per sq. m. , bag contents cover 4 sq. m. Apply every 5 or more years, when your soil fertility decreases!

Compost activator : Apply at the start of the composting process. Sprinkle 3 - 5 mm deep onto each new layer of green waste to encourage microbial activity, increase temperature, reduce odours, lock in nitrogen and speed up the process.  The end product is a cleaner, safer, naturally fertile, organic compost.

If anyone has tried using Rockdust in their own gardens let us know how they grow.
