Re: Butternuts
Ive got another plant growing in the conservatory which had already got a butternut and is now flowering afterwards and it came to me that Im pretty sure the other one didnt flower (im always excited to see the flowers!) Now, does it work that the fruit appears anyway, then the flower comes and has ...

Re: Beetroot. Why do I bother?
The best (and most foolproof) brownies Ive ever made are a HFW recipe with beetroot. They last several days and are still moist and lovely! Beetroot and chocolate brownies You can either grate or purée the cooked beetroot before adding to the mix - the latter gives a slightly more velvety texture. T...

Butternuts
I have started lots of plants off in pots in my conservatory. I have a butternut squash plant that was going great guns and outgrowing the room so I put it outside (as the weather was warm and sunny then) but kept it in the pot as it appeared so happy. It continued to grow, has lots of squashes on i...

Re: Pea'd off!!
Seems the pretty flowered peas arent doing too well. The pods are very flat, the peas dont seem to be developing and they just dont look right which is a shame. Have had rubbish luck this year with broad beans too. Normally theyre our best crop - we grow lots of them. This year we have only 1 or 2 p...

Re: Most "money-saving" vegetable
Has to be corn on the cob for me. Its around 4 euros for 2 when and if its available. If I dont have any that ive grown, I will have to buy some cos I love it so much! They dont sell it frozen here either.

Re: Numpty question
Oddly enough this year too, even the ones I think are peas, the pods are an odd shape. Although the peas are developing (slowly) the pods are flat and curled rather than being plump like peas ive had before.
Yes, will definitely try harder next year

Re: Home brew Outside UK
Lots of wine making going on here with the locals - all around my age group (38-45). Even more popular is the troussepinette style drink flavoured with walnut leaf or cherry leaf. Our friend makes several hundred litres of each flavour to keep the whole village going I think!

Re: Numpty question
Ive mixed my mange tout and peas up this year (not on purpose I might add  ) and really cant tell the difference from the pods. I picked a few for tea last night, some were stringy - Im guessing their probably the peas rather than the mange tout but cant tell by looking at them which is a worry.

Re: How long do celery and salsify take to germinate?
Wish I'd read the tip about germinating the sweetcorn earlier :banghead: (joins M3 in some headbanging!). Ive had a really poor germination rate this year. From 1 packet of 75 seeds I got 3 plants - seems such a waste. Mind you, lots of things have been a struglle this year except for the things in ...

Re: Pea'd off!!
Im sure I was eating some of them when planting and they were yummy like normal. Just so unusual to see these beautiful flowers.
Ive tried peas and mange tout later on in the year but never had much success, they just dont grow at the same rate they do early in the year.
