Chickens

We kept chickens - had no problems - and it was only when they are broody that they make any noise. Ate all scraps plus a bit of feed ... well worth it for the quality of the eggs!!! My sister keeps hens but with a cockeral - don't do that - your neighbours will short him or you!!! Never had problem...

cramp ball

Andy, It is easy to spot Cramp Ball - I'm sure you have got it right. It is identifiable by the concentric circles on its underside - once you have carefully removed it from the wood - delicate things! I don't know why the link is down - but if you want more verification - Google: Cramp Bal...

Bio-Diesel

The bio-power.co.uk link is down. I think of all the serious criminals out there - filling up with vegetable oil - and Gordon (or his replacement) wringing his hands over lost revenue. Tax pollution Gordon, not innovation!!! But that would be anti-capitalist and then we would be fcuked, cos no one r...

Bio-Diesel

This is the most interesting discussion I have had for weeks - thanks all, esp Gug for the first hand knowledge. As for Carbon Neutral ... I scratch my head ... and just try my best, in a simply equation balance ... the less I use ... not at all scientific ... but then is that a bad thing? Sad...

Wind Generators

From what i have heard, wind generators cost more in energy to construct than they make in their lifetimes. Additionally they are loud. I guess this is what I am trying to find out - but as there are lots of different designs and levels of sophistication - plus uses - and considerations of energy l...

Downshifting

Hi Tracey, How is life in France at the mo? Good to read all the comments here ~ I just arrived. I like to think that Rachel and I are shifting laterally, walking away from the fight, but I have decided not to just turn my back on my fellow humans scrambling in the pile, stepping on one another to g...

The Berk in Berkshire

Thanks for comment about Bluewoad - I'll tell Rachel. A lot of folk are selling up property in the south and buying "palaces" in Scotland for a the price - with left over to invest / live off. Crazy - and not good for us locals - is driving the prices up. But will never be as expensive as ...

Lighting Fire

It is really very easy - if, and this is a big if, you have the right materials and the right technique. It seems I have a tallent for teaching this to people cos I am getting inundated with enquiries (I offer courses 1 hour or full day). I never realised it until recently. So, if someone provides y...

Powering a TV from my Bicycle

Agree! I should of course make it clear I am not a complete nut (otherwise I would not be here on this site) and there will be times we want to snuggle up on the couch and watch a film together ... and relax! Multiple power sources cetainly seems essential but I like the idea of working hard enough ...

Paper Fire Lighters

How to make Fire Lighters from old newspaper . My apologies if I am teaching you to 'suck eggs' ... but some people might not know this: Scrunched up newspaper isn't very good for lighting coal fires as the burning paper cannot support the weight of coal, and burns too quickly to heat the coal. Solu...
