Re: 'Wee' compost problem perhaps...

Thanks Ellendra!

Yup, he's taking a lot of things that are much stronger than vitamin tablets. Maybe I'll try Gardener's Question Time and see if they have ever come across this sort of thing before. Might be worth mentioning this to other keen gardeners on meds.

Re: My rhubarb tastes salty

Hey Sue, thanks for replying! I should have said this on my original post...yes, I have had various tasters/testers and we are all of the same opinion...except my OH. Found out that a cut up raw potato can reduce the saltiness from cooking - at this stage it's worth a try, got nothing to lose but lo...

Re: My rhubarb tastes salty

OK, me again...just read my posting and I feel I have to point out that it's the rhubarb that tastes salty and not the compost!!!! Another CRAFT moment...doh!

My rhubarb tastes salty

Hi! On Sunday, we harvested the first of our rhubarb...looks amazing, strong thick stalks, lovely pink colour right thru' - terrific crop. Stewed some for dinner, made some jam and put the rest in a bucket for wine. So what's the problem? It tastes salty!!!!! Used our own compost as always - only th...

'Wee' compost problem perhaps...

G'day! Been composting happily and successfully for years until...the OH heard on Gardeners Question Time that it was beneficial for compost if you wee'd on it. So that's what he's been doing ever since; happy as a pig etc etc etc and sure enough we have had an amazing crop of rhubarb this year - he...

Re: Malo lactic ferment

Ok, OK, it was worth a try! Just being lazy and couldn't be bothered going down to the wine cellar [aka the back cupboard - the cold back cupboard - under the stairs!] so here goes... At this point in time I have: 1 d/j apple & rowan - 2008 4 apple & elderflower - 2009 1 apple - 2009 ...

Malo lactic ferment

We are in the alleged 'fortunate' position of having a number of demi-johns that are still producing a multitude of tiny little bubbles rushing up to the surface. We believe this to be a malo-lactic fermentation. Apparently this is something that wine makers should be pleased about. :dontknow: Initi...

Re: elderberry port

I tried bramble [aka blackberry] & elderberry wine in 2008. Glorious colour, perfectly clear...no bouquet, no taste - we thought we'd been wasting our time. Tweaked it as per MKG and it was quite a nice drink, not too alcoholic. Then we stood up. By 'eck!!! :drunken: So this year, we've got some...

Re: Labels

What I use for removing stubborn labels is WD40...a good soaking first in warm water to start things off so to speak and then once the majority of the label is no longer attached to said bottle, give it a blast of WD40, "work" it into the label-bits and off it comes. Some of the little bli...

Re: Re-Capping Beer Bottles.

Hello!

Elderflower beer? Sounds very interesting...would you care to pass on the recipe please? Looking for a recipe for birch sap beer and am wondering if just maybe this might be compatible...if that's the right word?

Thanks

Birch sap beer

G'day! [Just practising cos I'm off to Oz in 4wks 5days and 5hours - not that I'm counting you understand.] We've made the most delicious tasting birch sap wine - a little was accidentily swallowed at the first racking  - and still have approx 7 litres in the freezer. We froze it as soo...

Re: elderberry port

OK, what am I doing wrong? Our elderberry 'liquid' needs help to get out of the d/john - no body of any kind. This has been maturing [ha!!] since October 2008. Can anyone advise how to give this stuff a bit of body please? Or is it too late? Hope not, the colour and clarity are both amazing...does 2...

Should I be worried?

Been a while since I checked in here; I've had a quick squint thru' and didn't see any topics that "covered" the dilema that I may [or may not!] have. I have demi-johns sat sitting beside the heaters in my living room - all wrapped up nice n cosy in fluffy towels [this hasn't gone un-notic...

Re: "Stuff" growing in my demi-john!

Just an up-date... Racked the wine, smelt ok and tasted ok...a touch on the dry side but NOT vinegar, thankfully. Sterilised the d/john, racked and added a campden tablet and have had everything crossed that I can cross since then! So far, so good. Going to try to upload some pictures of what the in...
