Re: Starting a new project!

Sounds really cool. I don't have any expertise to lend, really, but I hope you'll keep us posted on the growth of the project.

The Gadfly Revolution is a blog for social (r)evolutionaries. See, we think positive social change on a large-scale is possible, but it's going to require a revolution, an evolution, of thought -- changing the way we see and interact with the world around us and its inhabitants. You can read our Ma...

Re: Wrapping paper? do you?

I was really pleased with my selfsufficientish wrapping this year. I got some brown and buff paper stuffed in with the pasta maker I bought off Amazon for my mum, and used that to wrap all my presenta. I made them look good by wrapping strips of red plastic bags like ribbons round them. I also make...

Re: Hello from Alabama, USA

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. :) I see this site has a large UK crowd. If I end up using some American slang you don't recognize, feel free to call me on it and I'll try to explain myself better.

Re: Eco knitting supplies

This may be a really stupid idea (I know nothing about knitting), but could you salvage yarn from items you find in a thrift store? I don't know how easy it would be to unravel something like that without damaging the material, but it might be a cheap alternative to buying the materials in raw form,...

Re: Uses for used cat litter?

My father used to sift out the clumpy bits, and use the leftover litter to level out the low spots in our dirt driveway. I seem to recall it was a clay-based litter, so no problems with nasty chemicals or anything.

Re: Paper logs

How long do these burn, though? I would think that a paper log would burn down to ash much quicker than a wood log. I guess if you have enough supplies, you could make plenty of logs, but it seems like you'd be doing a lot of work to keep your fire going. Or am I just missing something?

Re: Wrapping paper? do you?

We have a collection of gift bags in various sizes that we re-use every year (or at least until they get so worn out they aren't usable anymore). We use little stick-on name-tags, and just cover last year's name tag. Some of these bags have name-tags six or seven layers deep. :)

Cut off the toe and you can use it as a jacket for a ferret or dachshund.

I keep a handful in the back of my car for use as wipe rags.

Re: Waste free week

Sometime soon, I want to try an experiment to see how much I can reduce my waste in one week. I already do a lot of recycling and reusing of materials, but I wonder if I could get my family's weekly waste down to or close to zero.
