Biodiversity Offsetting, coming to a place near you soon...
I think this is going to be a complete disaster for British Wildlife http://earthfirstjournal.org/newswire/2014/06/03/offsetting-is-a-massive-threat-to-wildlife-warn-environment-groups/ Already, when you look at the permitting to destroy Robin and Starling nests, you can see where this is headed htt...

Re: Sourdough - not that hard!
I use an old dough method, I break off about a third of my dough before I add the salt and put it in a tub in the fridge. When I want to make another couple of loaves, I take the old dough out of the fridge for a couple of hours and then add 1 cup flour and 1/2 cup water to make my starter which I l...

Hotbeds
Hi All
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of hotbeds. I am wanting to make some, but have never made them before. How much fresh manure do you actually need to get sufficient mass to generate the heat?
Any info would be useful
Thanks

Re: Midges
I make a midge trap from an old plastic bottle. Cut the top off and invert it into the bottom bit. For the trap liquid, hot water, sugar and yeast. Dissolve the sugar in hot water, let it cool and add the yeast. The yeast feeds on the sugar and produces CO2, which attracts the midges (they think it ...

Upcycled baskets
Hi I was lucky enough to attend a workshop by the amazing Lois Walpole and found it really inspiring, since then I have tried making some baskets from old wire, found rope and cardboard boxes

I would be very concerned about dioxins if burning plastic on a domestic stove!
But yes bags et al can be cut into strips and woven into rope and coiled, her blog is http://loiswalpole.blogspot.co.uk/

Urban Basketry
I recently had the good fortune to attend a basketry workshop by the fantastic Lois Walpole. She is an inernationally exhibited basketmaker, who makes baskets and basketry type things from waste materials like tetra-pak, cardboard, paper, plastic strapping tape, wire, bottle caps and many other mate...

Re: bread help please!
I make wild yeast sourdough, which although not as "light", has a great texture and taste. It is easy to do and the longer fermentation time allows the yeast to free the folate from the grain and is healthier.

Re: What do you heat your home with and what does it cost??
I rent an ex RAF house and it is mostly electric storage heaters and electric for the water and cooker. Luckily there is a solid fuel stove which we had to agree to be responsible for and will have to pay to get the chimney blocked up when we leave. It is £5 per year to rent a peat bank and so I hav...

I have just finished Soul Hunters by Rane Willerslev, it is about hunting, animism and stuff amongst the Siberian Yukaghirs. A really interesting and thought provoking book. I am currently reading Technological Slavery , the collected writings of Ted Kaczynski.

Re: no-dig
Where I am the soil is just between 2-5 inches and full of stones so we broke up pallets and put seaweed down then a double layer of carboard (wet as it had been in the garden for a while) and then topped it with a mix of home compost some bought in compost and soil from the tattie bags Have to say ...

Re: PM has lost it
I wonder how the bankers and the corporate tax evaders will be punished. Personally I think that if we are to have any change from the current ecocidal trends then we will have to have riots etc as they will not give up power willingly. Also, as a former EF!-er I faced charges of aggravated trespass...

Re: Politics and religion........
I would have to say that I think politics and religion have a huge impact on my life personally (pagan, eco-anarchist) and on all of us more generally. That said they are subjects which can lead to some very heated discussions. I think the point is that we should try to be respectful of one another ...
