Re: Blueberry Bush

Blueberries do like very acid soil. Thankfully we have that in the back garden.
To get the best from the one we have we do have to net it early or the birds will get to the fruit before we do and I don't want that!

Re: Apple trees

I've ordered from Walcot Organic Nursery before (for others as gifts and now for myself). Lots of varieties for sale and the quality I've had has been good so far. If you decide for some of the more popular varieties then you'll be able to get them from various sources as both pot grown and bare roo...

Re: How much are you paying for firewood?

I paid £35 for about 1/4 cubic m of dries seasoned hardwood logs, delivered in a small builders type bag. The same chap does 1m3 bags for £70 but we've no where to store that amount of wood in our little house, though if we have words with neighbours we might be able to split a load. Thankfully we d...

Re: where to start ?

If your soil is an acid soil then blueberries and cranberries should work. We have both in our garden (which is on peat on the edge of the peak district) and is very acid soil and lots of rain. The blueberry does great as long as we net it to make sure the birds don't get there before us. The cranbe...

Re: railway sleepers

If you want them cutting, try and get someone else to do it. I helped a friend do some garden rework a few years back. Cutting the sleepers in half was the hardest bit. Two people and a big bow saw took a long time to get through on. Another friend with a chainsaw was having to sharpen the chain aft...

Re: Best place to buy seeds from and what to grow first?

I get quite a bit of stuff from the Organic Catalogue and have had stuff from Real Seeds also.

What to grow first? Stuff that you want to eat or look at. No point in growing for example radishes because they're easy if you're not going to like eating them.

Re: What's everyone busy with now?

Busy digging over and trying to work out what/where more permanent things might go on the allotment. Wondering about how much space to clear for the apple trees that I've ordered. Planted out some onion sets, now to clear enough space for garlic and the broad beans. All that and shifting manure up t...

Re: Need inspiration for vegetarian daughter

Big mushrooms and Halloumi as have been suggested. Corn on the cob chucked on the grill still with the leaves round the cob - the leaves burn but the corn kernels inside don't and steam wonderfully. Long sweet peppers roasted nice and slow over the bbq work well. Asparagus is good even though it's o...

Re: Ahah Rubbish Rhubarb Mystery solved

Given the right conditions Rhubarb will grow anywhere.
Ours is a large an vigorous clump in a garden with only acid soil in it.

Plenty of organic matter, plenty of water and leave plenty of stalks/leaves to keep the plants growing well.

Maybe give the rhubarb a year off to rest next year.

Hello Millymollymandy,
I use that number all over the internet as it was number given to me on a website years ago and it's kind of stuck since then.

In reality I'm nowhere near Franceliving just outside the town of Glossop, near Manchester UK.

Hello

Hello. Finally taken the plunge and joined the forum here, I've been lurking for a while reading various forum threads and so on. Me and my other half managed to get a half allotment earlier this year in the village where we live and have been working hard with it. That's as well as the few small ve...
