Re: Work/ Self sufficientish conflict

I think saying that you have to be mortgage free to be self sufficientish is a bit depressing. I agree that it's the ideal, but unfortunately unrealistic for most people. Saving up to buy is an excellent decision, but you don't have to be mortgage free, or even own a house, to be more self sufficie...

Re: 101 favorite/useful websites (other than this great one!)

I am so glad I finished my bit of work for the day before coming on here and seeing all these links! Mine is http://www.mumsnet.com , it has information on every single parenting dilemma you could ever hope to have, and lots of other stuff, with a distinct attachment parenting/breastfeeding/pro chil...

Re: self sufficient an expensive hobby ?

I love the current british (western?) attitude to debt. Credit card debt is every day and bog standard, and a mortgage is de rigueur. We totally fell into this trap too (with the credit cards, no mortgage, thankfully!) and it's taken us 14 months of bloody hard graft to get rid of it. Being debt fre...

Re: Work/ Self sufficientish conflict

I seem to spend half my life considering this, blogging about it, talking about it. I'm a bit boring on the subject! I'm in the enormously lucky position that my boyfriend likes his job and is happy to continue working. I work freelance (journalist), which brings in a little bit extra, but not a lot...

Re: What products do babies actually NEED?

The phone numbers of NCT, LLL and any other breastfeeding helplines you can lay your hands on! I'm sure at least 50% of women (probably lots more) have breastfeeding problems, and if you've got the numbers nearby, you're that much more likely to call than give up and go for a bottle of formula after...

Re: I know almost nothing - can you help me identify these pleas

After close examination, and a good crush 'n' sniff, I am certain it's wild marjoram. I am equally certain that the other is nightshade now, so good thing I checked with you wise lot!

We mostly only have lettuce too, but I am still insufferably smug when I put it on the table

Well done!

Re: I know almost nothing - can you help me identify these pleas

I will make a mental note to avoid the deadly nightshade - it might put my boyfriend off the whole foraging things slightly if I poison us both! Thanks very much for the opinions on the others - I've been googling the wild marjoram and it looks like it'll dry quite well, so I might go and get some o...

I know almost nothing - can you help me identify these pleas

I can't resize the photo on my computer (I am not entirely technically minded), so i've done a post on my blog that I'll delete in a bit when I've completed my identification. One has mysterious red berries that I am definitely not risking eating until I'm a little more sure what it is, the other I ...

Re: £1 a day per person for food

I'm having a toned down version of £1 per day for this week - £1.78 per day! And I'm allowing myself access to the store cupboard. All of which probably makes it completely cheating, but I'm easing myself into the concept slowly!

Re: Completely waterlogged veg troughs - what would you do?

I think I may have been a teensy weensy bit timid in my hole making. I was worried that compost would fall out (I've never grown anything before this year!) Have just lifted up one trough and the holes are absolutely teeny - I don't think I let my boyfriend near any kind of sensible size dril...

Completely waterlogged veg troughs - what would you do?

We had a ridiculous storm last night, so of course I rushed out this morning to inspect my fledgling veg crops. Most of them have survived intact, but three troughs of beetroots and carrots are completely and utterly waterlogged. I did cut holes in the troughs when I first got them, but obviously no...
