Re: 'The Edible Garden' starts at 8pm on BBC 2 on April the

Anyone know if there is going to be another series? Although it was a very weak experiment of hers, with loads of cheating etc, I think it was a good program to inspire people. I liked the idea of windowsill salads, sprouted seeds and pea shoots..... great for winter. I wish my hens were as quiet as...

Re: Like to give up the day job?

Most people are talking about doing part-time jobs. This is not being self sufficient :dontknow: . It's better than working full time ;). I don't see how I'd be able to give up work at the moment. I'd have to find £70 a month for Council Tax and £370 for mortgage payments each month, then theres oth...

Re: Like to give up the day job?

Hi Misty44, good question! I would love to do this! I work in The Health Service and am becoming very tired of it all now. I am very very lucky that I now only have my modest mortgage to pay with all other debts cleared so have thought about going part-time at work. Now, I know some people may think...

Re: How best to grow chard?

Well, the Chard turned out to grow very well! The only thing is, I don't like them when fully grown. I have some seed left over from last year so will sow them and use as salad leaves when small.... I like them! :)

Re: Tiny raddishes, loads of leaf.

I agree with Julie - too much nitrogen. I think your whopping cabbages going mad suggest that too. All is not lost, though - let a few of your radishes go to seed and eat the seed pods. Mike Well at least I know what to grow on my old disused chicken pen! ..... more cabbages  Eat the s...

Tiny raddishes, loads of leaf.

Hi. I interplanted radishes between my cabbages as a fill in crop. I have loads of them popping up, although overcrowded by the whopping cabbages that have gone mad, there were big leaves on the raddishes but hardly any had developed big enough roots to eat. I have left them for long enough as I kno...

Re: Perennial vegetables?

Have a shoofty at this site Ben, http://www.perennialveg.org.uk/ There are some good plants listed there. :flower: Hi Keaniebeanie. Yes, I've had a look at this site but there is very little information about each plant and what to do with it. :? I'll just have a look around for broccoli and the sp...

Re: Compost Help!

Yes Bobby, my garden is overlooked too. Basically, I'd get reported to the police for exposing myself. I prefer to say Wee or wee wee. It's a bit child-like. :cooldude: I don't know why "piss" sounds mildly offensive bad but it does. But you meant no offence obviously.

Perennial vegetables?

Hi, a few years ago I heard that there is plenty of veg you can grow that comes back each year. I like growing things from seed but I also get frustrated and impatient. I would like asparagus but you can't crop it in the first year! What is available and from where? I hear there is a perennial brocc...

Re: Compost Help!

Nomanda, mine is looking a bit sorry for itself since I planted it out in the fresh air :pale: Thanks to SSG and Snapdragon....... Good idea about weeing in my shed, as it will save me treading through the house when I'm gardening. The compost bin has been emptied now. It wasn't actually that bad an...

Re: Compost Help!

Jessiebean...... Had a route around in the bin this morning and have found some useable compost mixted in with bits of unrotted conifer and still formed turf. Just sifted that out and placed back on the top. Have also watered it. Not done the wee wee bit yet. There were 2 old rhubarb crowns th...

Re: Compost Help!

Thanks you two. Yes it's a Dalek type thing. It does seem to be too dry and definately not turned to sludge. I remember putting in some big clods of turf from someone elses garden in there so im sure there would be worms. It is sitting on earth. I don;t really have room for 2 bins at the moment. I w...

Compost Help!

Hi all. About three or more years ago I aquired a compost bin from the local council. I filled it with a mix of lawn clippings, veg peelings and small twigs, non perenial weeds etc. It's still full and I've never been able to use any of it as it's just dry material that hasn't rotted down very much ...

Hi Rosendula, yes I think they need time to sort out the pecking order!

Funny how they can all fit into a small nest box though :grouphug:
