Re: tasty chicken breeds

You know, DBE, I live a scant 15 miles from the town of Marans and you'd expect to be able to find a good dual-purpose strain here if anywhere (certainly the town's website waxes lyrical about the bird), but I never have. Egg layers, yes, though never of the same quality as in the UK. Bit ironic, r...

Re: tasty chicken breeds

If you find a good strain of Marans they are an excellent dual purpose bird. So when you hatch you have the benefit of top quality eggs from the pullets and the spare boys can be eaten I find mine will make about 2 - 2.5 kilos in 24 - 30 weeks just fed on straight wheat after an initial 6-8 weeks on...

Re: Appenzeller Spitzhauben - Silver Spangled

What pretty birds. I assume they have Royal ( hat lover) names. Do they really lay those dark brown eggs? The Appenzellers lay a lovely pearly white egg. I have kept Marans (the ones that lay the dark brown eggs) for many years now but suddenly got interested in breeding for a range of egg colours,...

Re: Cooking an old hen

Plucked them, then hung for a few days, then dressed and slow cooked for about 8 hours tried them but tough, then slowcooked again for about 8 hours, tried again...

Re: Seed sowing ... in wallpaper paste

Hi there - I'm interested in trying the potato paste for fluid sowing

How much flour to water, and do you need to cook it at all. Years ago I made my own wallpaper paste out of flour, and I remember it had to be cooked :-)

Re: Inexpensive seed suplier

sales@premierseedsdirect.com Or find them on ebay. I have used them these last 3 years, seeds are 99p a pack, but only one postage charge, and they do allot of perennials, which I like, and I find germination to be very good, and the packs are again not fancy, but you get allot for your money. The ...

OK - here's a recipe for something large and unusual for those - "must have something different" folk In a cookbook called International Cuisine, presented by California Home Economics Teachers, 1983 (ISBN 0-89626-051-8), you will find: Stuffed Camel 1 whole camel, medium size 1 whole lamb...

Re: Sarpo potatoes - anyone got any experiences

I agree the flavour and texture is underwhelming. I have tried a quite a few of the varieties since they first became available a few years ago. Don't think I shall bother trying again unless they get a wonderful write up for flavour, as really that is what I have home grown potatoes for. I grew Tol...
