Re: Plant identification help please
I know what you mean about the dead nettles, ground ivy for instance has a very distinctive herby smell and that's a dead nettle family, you're right it does look like mint but it just isn't, it has a very mild smell and mint is pretty strong, wood sage makes sense, as it was used to flavour beer, a...

Re: New Foraging Basket for the elite and the amateur
I'd say any sort of pop-up or folding container would be a good idea, I tend to just have a rucksack and a series of bags or plastic boxes, for nuts as harder fruits etc I use a large shemagh scarf as a recepticle, be interested to see your designs.

Re: Any other foragers in the north west?
I think the more the merrier, it's good to get kids involved in foraging and things like that young so they grow up knowing about it and don't think it's weird like most people seem to.

Re: Any other foragers in the north west?
If we can decide on a location i can lead a foraging walk or if someone else has expertise can team up to lead it. So far I'm Chester, we have lancs and Wigan, so somewhere in Cheshire or lancashire or north Wales would be an idea. I'm out of the country end of march, I'd suggest April or early may ...

Re: someone is trying to steal my cat!
I don't have a cat (my terrier would chase it) but I don't really get cats, they are nice on the house to stroke etc, but I'd be too worried about letting them out alone and they aren't very loyal pets. My friends family have a cat that was their neighbours, they for a new kitten which he didn't lik...

Re: mixing chicken breeds
I agree, it's not really practicable or desirable to keep them apart. The orpigtons make great broody hens for any eggs.

Re: Flavoured syrups
It's just depends how light or heavy a syrup you want, I did around 500g sugar to 900ml water, heat to simmering point and leave 5-10 mins stirring occasionally until all sugar is dissolved and syrup is clear. Removed from heat, pour syrup into heatproof jug or jar, add your flavouring, I pounded th...

Flavoured syrups
Seems to be the fashion to have flavoured syrups on puddings/ in cocktails/ in coffee etc, I have just made two experimental batches, one a simple vanilla syrup which is nice, the other using dried wild fennel seeds i foraged last year. The fennel one is basically an aniseed syrup almost exactly lik...

Re: Foraging goals for 2012
I haven't really had much opportunity to foraging for seafood or Coastal plants so thinking of going up to north Wales in the spring and seeing what I can get. Have to say the gorse flower cordial I made was actually pretty good, especially with lemonade. I've just got into home brewing this year wi...
