The thing that concerns me most about this whole covert urine transfer lark is the thought of getting run over while crossing the road between the house and the allotment site... Imagine the police calling at home to break the news to the wife "...there was just one more thing madam. We, um, ah...

Thanks for all your advice. We have a toilet on the allotment site that's connected to the main sewer. However, I'm so close to the site that I can just go in a bottle at home and then carry it over to the plot. Although I may get some funny looks from the other plotholders as I haven't seen any of ...

Advice on composting weeds please!

I am by no means a master composter so would like to pick your brains if possible. Here's the deal: We've just got a new allotment plot that has about 3 months of weed growth (which, given the warm autumn we've had is a fairly substantial amount of organic matter). Now, I currently have one compost ...

When I first got into gardening in small spaces I also referred to a book called Square Foot Gardening, but I don't remember the name of the author of that one. I have that one too! It's by Mel Bartholomew :) Another interesting book that I've got (but haven't really got properly stuck into) is Eli...

I'm guessing that if you're very rural you might have an oil or solid fuel burning aga or stove type thing, in which case a power cut won't impact your tea making ability, but for people who use electric kettles, the Kelly Kettle is a really cool alternative. When just a few twigs are enough to boil...

This is a fascinating (if somewhat scary) Google Earth hack to show the effects of sea level rises up to 14m - supposedly how high they will rise after the collapse of the Greenland & West Antarctic ice sheets: http://flood.firetree.net/

I have a copy of Jeavons' book. It's good in terms of describing the whole "Grow Biointensive" method for maximising yield from a limited area, but for a complete beginner it doesn't offer too much practical detail on exactly what to do with each type of plant. Maybe supplementing it with ...

Not sure about what the crack is now it's gone to seed but my father-in-law swears that the best way to promote good growth is to cover the plants with an overturned bathtub - makes them stretch as they struggle to find the light apparently... not 100% sure at what time of the season you're supposed...

(another) Hi from Leeds

Hi. I'm in Leeds. I think one or two other folk in this forum are from this neck of the woods too - hi! I'm a bit new to this self-sufficiency caper to be honest, but I have dabbled with homebrew (from a kit, but you've got start somewhere, right?) and grew a few onions and some garlic last year. I'...
