Re: How to solar dry blackberries?

I haven't dried blackberries but that was because after my one attempt at drying raspberries I decided it just wasn't worth it. Took a long time (in an electric dehydrator, not a solar set-up, think it was something like 10 hours), they shrank to almost nothing and just didn't really taste good enou...

Re: Uses for old CD's

Someone suggested that they could be melted into shapes after being heated in the oven This can be dangerous because the discs will give off toxins especially the silver dye, which is very toxic. Might be getting mixed up with doing this with records and assuming you can do the same with cds, perha...

Re: Tea News...

Still, it's good to know what other people might come up with in a discussion sometime. I actually had a discussion forced on me by a complete stranger while waiting at a traffic lights recently and he wanted to convince me that the reason Israel was right for their response to the aid ships enterin...

Re: How do i make liquid soda crystals?

I'm not sure but I know that when using soda crystals you put them in the drum with the clothes rather than in the dispenser drawer so depending on where your problem with clogging happens that might be all you need to do.

Re: Preserving radishes

There's a recipe for radish soup (using the radishes and the leaves) in the River Cottage Veg Patch Handbook. Won't post it as that would be naughty but if you have it or know someone who does or can get it from the library it might be good.

I don't think that's a stupid questions at all. Will be very useful to konw if and when I ever actually get myself an allotment/garden.

Re: Pickled cucumber

Thanks. I made up another set of spices without dill seeds and used them last night but I still have one more batch to do so might just throw them in. Although I had found another recipe for bread and butter pickles which also uses allspice berries and cloves which I thought would be interesting, to...

Re: Preserving garlic

I tried pickling garlic last year as I quite liked the sound of it. Don't know what I did wrong but the jars sort of landed at the back of the cupboard and got forgotten about so it was months later before I remembered them, opened one and it STANK. Really not a good smell either. All of them were l...

Might as well reply to this post rather than starting a new one on essentially the same subject. Have just posted this over on http://www.thegreenlivingforum.net/forum/ but thought I'd try it here as well just in case there are more people awake here than there  I'm having a slight emerg...

Re: Big Step Towards the Emerald Isle

Good luck with the move. Not sure if you're already aware of it or not but there is a discussion forum based in Ireland which was originally an off-shoot from the River Cottage forum. So, in case you're looking for a few ish-type contacts you might like to check it out. http://countrytalkandtips.myf...

Re: Should i buy a Passata machine?

I have a Flotte Lotte (just did a quick google and found one UK online shop selling them here although in the instructions that came with mine it's called a Busy Lizzie in English) and found it really useful last year although in the end I didn't end up doing as much as I'd hoped. The tomatoes have ...

Yay. I'm not alone.   Every once in a while I read a science fiction/fantasy book where they've discovered some ancient manuscripts full of really useful knowledge but it's all very frustrating because of all the stuff that's not explained because obviously at the time the m...

Re: hello from gloucester soon to be travelling europe!

Sounds fabulous. I hope to do something similar in a year or two, when I will finally (hopefully!) be debt-free. Won't have much in savings but hopefully enough to put my stuff in storage for a year and then I want to travel around wwoofing and basically trying to figure out if I have what it takes ...

Re: Hand Sewing Patchwork

What everyone who has described using paper templates above has left out is something that puzzled me as a kid and for years afterwards and still does (at least, I know what to do know just still don't understand why no-one ever mentions it). I don't know if it's because a certain level of intellige...
