Hi Snapdragon, My Mum grew snapdragons eons ago. You definately don't dig to start a no dig garden. Just put newspaper on the lawn, dirt, sand, concrete or whatever and build some layers of straw/ compost. Try to get hold of a booklet by Ester Dean. She describes methods suitable for people with all...

I've learnt to do all the killing and cutting up myself. I once asked my missus to help and she trimmed every scrap of fat off everything. Can you imagine that? Pork chops without the yummy fat part!

My fences are only about a metre high and in places the goats can see over them. The top wire is barbed wire and they never attempt to jump them. However anywhere they can the buggers will crawl under the fences and I have to tie the bottom wire to a log etc. I am impressed with the gates and fences...

Hello Mrs D. Congrats on the new place. It should not really be such a daunting task to get it sorted. Here in the big sunburnt country 3/4 of an acre is about the size of a budgie cage! One of the best investments I ever made (and I've made some bad ones) was for six panels of swimming pool fence. ...

I love my sheep. I better rephrase that as an ex Kiwi... I like my sheep. No trouble at all. Just put in a paddock and forget. With mine the wool just falls off. I think the dry conditions help avoid foot and fly type problems. Hoping to see a few lambs in the comming weeks.

You can blanch celery with soil, wrap with newspaper or slip a short length of clay pipe over the plant. All you are doing is excluding light from the stems so they have to grow larger and upward to get to the sunlight. Personaly I prefer my celery green and small. It tastes so much better than the ...

I grow my potatoes on top of the soil. Slash the grass first. Put down a layer of cardboard. Place the potatoes on top and cover with the slashed grass. Add more mulch if needed and sprinkle some manure on top. As the plants grow keep adding mulch until flowering is over and the tops die. There are ...

Hi Kath,
A big Australian welcome to the forum. Your move has reminded me of the time we came here to a front lawn like a bowling green. We had a ball digging the whole lot up and turning it into a massive herb garden.
Look forward to some before and after photos.

Pardon my ignorance but until tonight I had never heard the term 'alotment'. Is this something you rent, buy or squat? Are your house blocks too small to have a garden? It certainly sounds like a good idea especially for people who live in a city.

Wow! What a friendly place. Thank you for the welcome. Hamilton Island is a major tourist resort just off the Queensland coast. You can google it if you would like to have a look. I drive 3/4 hour to the Harbour then travel 1/2 an hour by fast catamaran to work and back each day. My wife and I both ...

Hello from The Whitsunday Islands, Queensland, Australia.

Hello all, My name is Willow. I live on 6 acres in North Queensland and work on beautiful Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays. I'm an ex Kiwi and I grow all the food (meat & veges) we need with a little left over to sell. My wife & I are both in our early 50s and we keep cows, goats, sheep, p...
