Re: Cape Gooseberry

CC, i'm in the borders area, and have/had 1 plant. During the few days where it was about 0, and we got a bit of snow, all the leaves shrivelled up and died. I've now moved it indoors in the hopes it survives, thus the have/had description. Not sure if they would survive up your way unless they were...

Re: Beer - to bottle or not

I always bottle with grolsch style bottles. They keep for a year and more quite happily. If the pressure builds up, then they just squeak as the gas pushes out through the seal. And they are re-usable. Only issue is getting enough of them. I would suggest ebay, but postage makes it expensive, and so...

Re: Anybody got any sloes this year ???

The Borders area had zip, where i had loads last year. A friend got 20Kg last year. This year? A handful. Well if anyone has an excess, i'm looking for a carrier bag full. I'll pay the postage

Re: eggy cider

As an aside, i have another question.

I am tempted to try something different this year. I've mulched all the apples through a grinder (50 Gallons worth). Has anyone tried doing it by just leaving all the mulch to ferment, and then press later? Or is this going to be a real bad idea?

Re: Blackberry wine

To be honest, i have now come to a set procedure when making wine. (as a result of corks shooting across the room followed by a stream of various wines that had not completely fermented.) A big 55 litre drum in the kitchen is normally the primary fermenter, where the must sits for 5 - 7 days. It is ...

Mine seemed like they had died, as all my other fruit bushes were budding like crazy.

The wee green leaf could well be a Rasp shoot, and mine did a similar thing. Leave it for a bit, and you should be able to tell.

You need to keep the temperature between 21 and 27 degrees C. Thats's the best temp for the fermentation.

Loose airlock won't stop the process, but the gasses given off by the fermentation may be escaping through the holes rather than the airlock, thus "looking" like nothing is happening.
