Re: What do you do to save energy?

I can't work out which sort of kettle is cheaper to run either. The way I save energy with the kettle is to put any left over hot water from the kettle in a vacuum flask to use later. I don;t purposely boil more than I need but as I am not very good at calculating how much water to put in I often ov...

Re: 5 year olds and farm animals and E. coli

When our children were small we quite often visited godstone farm as it is quite near where my parents in law live. They had big signs telling people to wash their hands and provided sinks etc. We always washed ours but I remember a lot of people did not bother. Our children knew that they didn't ge...

Green Aura wrote 'not sure MPs are underpaid, Hetty, but I sure as sh1t think news readers are overpaid if they get 92K ' I don't think MPs are necessarily underpaid either but if they only mix with people from the media and big business that are paid large amounts they may see themselves as ...

Re: MP's Expenses

I just looked at a parliamentary website and found that ordinary MPs (i.e not cabinet ministers) actually earn £64,000 a year, the £140,000 is for cabinet ministers. I was shocked to see a news presenter person asked by an MP how much she earned to hear her say £92,000. I think that too many MPs hav...

Re: Avoiding Supermarkets....

I use goodness direct for specialist foods for my son (dairy and gluten free) but I have just looked at their bulk packs of things like lentils and they are rather expensive, even when compared to Waitrose prices which is what I just did. Red lentils cost nearly twice as much so I think I will be ca...

There is a great follow up story though as local people who read the news report came out to help.

Re: new to the site and self sufficiency

When I just had two hens they and my three cats pretty much ignored each other even though one of out cats is a prolific hunter . Now we have four hens and the three cats are obviously at the bottom of the pecking order as the younger two hens chase and peck the cats

I always make gluten and dairy free fruit cake as my son has allergies. it doesn't seem any different from ordinary fruit cake. I just substitute the flour with Doves farm gluten free flour and use Pure dairy free margarine. Fruit cake doesn't have to have alcohol in either. I haven't found substitu...

I,m really surprised that the 'little old ladies' don't seem to be aware of the reuse of bags etc as my Mum (who qualifies for this title but even at 80 would hate to be called one  ) has never got out of the habit of carrying proper bags when she goes shopping. Observing others of her generati...

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the ban on feeding hens kitchen scraps?

I know DEFRA forbid it but why?

My daughter was reluctant to nap in the afternoon from 18 months and I really needed that rest due to being pregnant so we both had a rest in the afternoon listening to a story tape and we often both fell asleep

The baby's mother may be suffering from PND but his father isn't so why isn't he doing more for the child. Also when I had PND the last thing I wanted to do was to go out anywhere or get dressed or anything but I do realise that a much younger woman (I was 30 when I had my first) could react to PND ...

I am planning to have a go at turning the collar of one of my DH's shirts. They always go at the collar while the rest of the shirt is fine. I always buy cotton ones so I can at least use the rest of the shirt for craft projects but this time I am going to try and renovate the shirt itself. Not quit...
