Apple ID anyone

I have an apple tree that I have no idea what variety it is. It was bought from Lidl at an end of season sale price, I think I paid a Euro for it and it was labelled as a Bramley. The rootstock is very dwarfing, it's about 10 years old now and it has grown no taller than 1 metre, and is loaded with ...

It looks to be missing us out, for once. I hope your travel plans go to plan.
Not necessarily Maggie, this is the long range forecast for Thursday midnight.
We are sailing on the Dublin > Holyhead ferry, so not as exposed as further south.

Winter storms

Well it looks like the summer calm is soon over with Hurricane Helene about to come calling. Murphy has dictated that it will hit Ireland next Tuesday just when we are due to catch the ferry to Wales. Maybe it will be delayed a bit, or better still wander off and annoy someone else. . ...

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

I would advise against getting a "proper job" I wasn't really serious Weedo, I haven't had a job, proper or otherwise, for 25 years and I aint gonna start now. Not that I had many proper jobs before that, as I was mostly self employed. So yes, that allows me to play and try growing new things, just...

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

I know, I should get a "proper job", Flo.
Never mind, winter is coming and I can play with my radios instead and leave all those poor defenceless plants alone.

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

Also of note, I finally have a pineapple with roots.
That's something I did on purpose, and have tried before and failed.

Re: How to grow an Avocado tree

But why do you want to grow an avocado? There's self sufficient and being completely .... See point 7 of my instructions, Flo. Probably because I'm soft hearted when it comes to plants, frinstance I sow more tomato seeds than I want, they all germinate and so I HAVE to grow them all regardless. Suc...

Re: Honebody day

Still picking white grapes for sultanas, I would think we are about half way through.
The black grapes were finished a few weeks ago, not such a good crop as last year for some reason, but we have just over a Kilo of raisins from 7 Kg of fruit.

Plums ... Plums .... Plums That reminds me of Spam ... Spam ... Spam (or am I showing my age? ) Would you believe I have a glut of ..... TOMATOES. I grew fewer plants this year and now have all that we need preserved; dried, bottled puree, bottled chopped, bottled whole, with just the require...

Small World

It is a small world, or at least in our Ishy world. We have a glut of Discovery apples and as they don't keep we decided to juice them. I'm rather partial to fruit juice, but when I fancy a juice drink I don't want to wait 5 or 6 hours for some to defrost, so bottling seemed best. I had no idea how ...

Re: Free food

UPDATE ... Today was bread making day, so a good time to see what the foraged wheat would make. It was threshed and winnowed, and totally dry by now, so it was put through the coffee grinder. It made surprisingly fine flour and not the fairly coarse powder I was expecting. It yielded 165g of flour w...

Re: Identification help please

I'm sure there must be better ways of getting the flavour into your food Well, bear in mind that I'm talking about over 100 years ago when artificial flavourings and even natural essences were not even thought of, so any flavourings were restricted to what was available growing locally. Lots of thi...
