Re: Moving but want to take some fruity plants with me...

Are there any border restrictions in europe when transporting plants/roots ?
ie. laws in the country you are traveling to, bans the import of certain plants due to pests or diseases.

Re: Get preserving pan clean

I use a concentrated orange oil based cleaner for things like this.
Let it soak over night if necessary.

no smoke, no chemical reaction, great smell.

Re: Hop trellis and yard art

My neighbors like it. I must admit, the photos make it look larger than it really is. to get a photo to really show it, I had to aim the camera upward so the sky was the background. it is 21 feet tall and the apple trees that are between the sculpture and the street are 16 feet tall, so the trees ki...

Re: 2009 Goozbeit (Beet wine with Gooseberries)

YES, dried Malt extract !

I wish I would have had more DME in this batch, Last year I put in nearly 4 lbs. I only had the 1lb 11oz on hand, so that's all I used. DME gives a wine more sweetness even if fermented out dry as well as a smooth mouthfeel.

Hop trellis and yard art

yes, I made it to look like a giant fishing pole, bent like there is a fish on the hook. Since the trellis will only have vegetation on it for 3 or 4 months of the year, I thought I'd like it to be an art sculpture too. http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu127/JonB_in_Glencoe/100_0182-1.jpg this is ...

Homegrown "Cascade Hops" for swapsies

Any of you homebrewers interested in Cascade Hops ? I have two plants, they produce about 20 lbs of hops each year. after dehydration that is about 4 lbs. That is more than I can use. I have properly dehydrated them at 105 deg. Fahrenheit for 10 hours. then I imediately Vacuum packed them in 2 oz an...

Re: Apple Jack

Good point about the fusel oils and Methyl alcohols, thanks.

This is Minnesota, the whole state is my freezer.
I ferment the cider after pressing in the fall, then just bulk age
it til our weather becomes cold, we get at least one or two
cold spells where the temps drop to -25 degrees fahrenheit.

Apple Jack

Does anyone here make Apple Jack ? in case this term is unfamiliar to you, Apple Jack is apple cider that is fermented, then distilled by freezing...several times. when most of the water is removed, the cider is concentrated as much as 10 to 1. You end up with a beverage that is at least 20 % alcoho...

Greetings from Minnesota USA

I've been a fan of "Good Neighbors" (as it's known in the US) for years. I have lived my life, in many small ways, as self-sufficient as possible. I am about to move to a Hobby farm (as they are known in the US) 43 acres part wooded and part pasture and part being tilled, with a small house, a cattl...
