Re: What to do with a bale of hay ?

I'm not sure what constitutes as Hay in the UK? in my area, it is typically alfalfa and when it gets wet, it really stinks. I would NOT use it like straw, ie. around strawberries. I would compost it. mix some fresh grass clippings, some freshly composted soil, and water.

Re: Cuttin' firewood

Keith, it is White Oak. As you can probably notice the "wet" looking spot in the middle is rotten...if teh base wasn't rotten, I would have probably not been able to successfully cut it with that saw, Stihl 360 Pro, which is my largest saw. niknik, yes, lots of wood from that tree, except for the ba...

Cuttin' firewood

Normally I don't get to cut Large trees and actually I prefer not to. this is a Dead windfall, the base is about 36 inch in Diameter (almost a 1 meter) My chainsaw has a 20 inch bar (about 1/2 Meter). This is the largest tree I ever Cut up. http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu127/JonB_in_Glencoe/bi...

IF YOU'RE NOT CONFIDENT OF A CLEAN KILL WITH ONE SHOT, DON'T BOTHER PULLING THE TRIGGER. Mike +1 on that same thought. I take several squirrels (in town, where firearm shoting is not allowed), for the BBQ. I use a air rifle. Clean one shot kill or don't pull the trigger. We owe that to the animals ...

Re: Rain awareness...something new to stress about!

Seriously considering connecting another tank up to the other end of the house. Of course if I did that, we would have one of those rain-soaking summers where we have too much water. Regards, Chuck I have 2 rain barrels (50 gallon each) and a underground cistern (about 1500 gallons) Last summer was...

Maple sap is just starting to run

The maple sap is just starting to run  I make syrup a little differently that most. I tap two large trees, each with a triple tap. During the best part of the run, I get about 12 gallons of sap per day. I simmer large pots full of sap on my woodstove all day and all night, when it gets t...

Plus, we had lots of snow storms...I think the season total so far is a...
