Re: Cat litter

I remove the poo each morning and put it on the lit fire in my woodburner and reuse the litter as long as I can.

Re: Veg for Christmas

I just have a modest selection, not like the real growers above. There's aubergines, tomatoes, beetroot, parsnips, carrots and some bits of celery, then butternut squash and onions in store. Also loads of sage, rosemary and a little parsley. It so lovely having all this veg though and hopefully, now...

Re: How "green"is your xmas tree?

There are some brilliant "book" trees on this site: http://www.themarysue.com/12-christmas-trees-made-out-of-books/ Mine this year, was a gift from a friend who has to thin out a Christmas tree plantation, but next year I may consider getting a rooted tree to last. When I was a child we had a tree w...

Re: Milk intolerance?

I have developed a lactose intolerance since my mini gastric bypass in July. They bypassed the first two metres of intestine where the lactase acts on the lactose. I had stomach cramps, flatulence like you'd never believe, non-solid poohs and couldn't leave the house as they were unpredictable and c...

Re: mixing chicken breeds

My hens too are all in together and the resulting chicks are interesting and it's fascinating to watch what colour chick emerges from the incubated eggs. They all still lay beautiful eggs.

Re: What types of pumpkin and squash did you grow this year?

Really weird butternut squashes! What was the result of your complaint to the seed company, Odsox? I think I'll stick to my Walthams butternuts which produced well and normal squashes.

Has anyone grown red cabbage before?

Has anyone grown red cabbage before? I've never grown any sort of cabbage, but love spicy red cabbage and would like to grow them for next year. Any advice?

Re: What types of pumpkin and squash did you grow this year?

Lovely photos Oddsox and Red. I have ordered the usual butternut and large pumpkins seeds and added Crown Prince which look lovely. I may not have finished, as I eat so many now that there may be room for another sort. The photo Oddsox was of the Harrier was it?

What types of pumpkin and squash did you grow this year?

This year I grew Walthams Butternut Squash and got 26 fruits altogether. I also grew the usual large pumpkin which people carve for Halloween, can't remember the name of that, but only got one pumpkin from four plants. I like the look of pumpkin Invincible which has a steely grey flesh - has anyone ...

Re: Rapid growing hedging suggestions?

I used to live in Cornwall, which I appreciate is probably a very different climate from your area. We grew escallonia from cuttings to screen a summerhouse from the main garden area. It grew very quickly and had white and pink flowers, some of the plants were also variegated. If it would grow in yo...

Lepista Sordida - a type of Wood Blewit

According to page 89 of River Cottage Handbook No. 1 Mushrooms, the following photos which I took this afternoon in the lane leading to my hamlet, look absolutely like Lepista Sordida which are some of the other blewits which taste just as good. The fungi are each about 8"-9"/20-23cm across. Blewits...

Brilliant, you'll never regret it. Not only will you have fresh, wholesome veggies but you'll get all that exercise too - what more can you want!

Re: Winter tomatoes ripening

I still have my summer fruiting ones in the polytunnel - never got round to clearing up and picked three more Italian type ones this evening when I put the birds away and there are loads more on the vines at the moment.
