Re: Cooking Parsnips

I always used to boil the parsnips before roasting and, as I had done since a child, drank the water when cooled and fridged, as my mother used to say the vitamins were all in the very sweet cooking liquid. Also I have fried them off after parboiling. Nowadays I just roast them without parboiling. T...

Re: Mulching Leaves with Lawnmower

My neighbour had raked all his leaves, in his almost entirely grassed large garden, into piles and a week or so later they were still there - some on the roadside verge. I asked him if he was going to use them and if not, could I have them please. They are now all bagged up and going to turn into lo...

Re: Preserves for the Winter.

Amazing amount of work, Durgan. What happens to the last remaining bits of sludge - hens, compost or something else? What do you do with the very bitter juices?

Re: My Garden Plan

You need to make sure that the bees are able to fly out almost immediately without a very tall boundary, also that the hives aren't too close to the hens and that they are sheltered from the prevailing winds. We actually had a compost bin (pallets) in the hen run, which the hens loved rummaging in a...

Re: a REAL garden... exciting!

Hello Julie I had dreadful clay soil in Gloucester when I lived there. It was like concrete in the dry summer months and doubled the size of my wellies when I walked on it in the winter. I imported lots of gravel and sand and dug that it which definitely improved it. I had chickens, and the contents...

Re: Storing Aubergines

Yes! I got a reply from William's Kitchen in Nailsworth. I don't remember breadcrumbs being on top, but may be good this way. Split aubergines in half longways brush with olive oil and bake till flesh is soft. Cool and scoop the flesh out rough chop and mix with ingredients you like such as tomatoes...

Re: Quarter acre plot

When I first moved to Brittany I bought half an acre of grassland. A pig shed was built and electric fencing used to define an area for my two piglets. The fencing was moved about a bit and they certainly never used as much as a quarter of an acre from when they arrived to when they left for the sla...

Re: Storing Aubergines

Thanks, TRRE. I have just remembered that I used to buy stuffed aubergines from a delicatessen in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, and have emailed them to see if they still have the recipe - it's from about 25 years ago so I'm crossing my fingers.

Poppy Seeds

Are the poppy seeds I have collected for next year's poppies also suitable for using on bread etc. or are the ones for cooking completely different?

Re: split butternut squash

You could always cook the split ones and freeze them for use in soups later. I had twenty-six this year and none with splits, but for some reason I only got one pumpkin off four plants. Last year the pumpkins were meandering all over the veggie plot.

Wine from home grown grapes - help!

This year I have a surfeit of white grapes. Normally I would have eaten most of the bunches by now but, I am not a well woman (!) at the moment and can't. Please does anyone have any idea how to turn my bunches of white grapes into wine at home. I have the usual "wine from fruit" making equipment ju...

Re: Can more than 1 cockrel co-exsist?

I have had trouble with two cockerels in the past, with bloody heads and horrid injuries within minutes of being introduced to each other, so obviously we've had to pass a cockeres on to maintain the status quo with one cockerel. However, for the last few months I have had four adult cockerels and o...

Re: Aubergines?

I think it's blossom end rot - see http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/3000/3117.html

It affects tomatoes, aubergines and peppers.

Re: Aubergines?

I had one aubergine plant in the polytunnel this year, not sure what sort, but I bought it as a plant from the local garden shop. I haven't seen it for seven weeks as I wasn't well and haven't been up to the polytunnel at all, and it was covered in tomato plants which hadn't been sideshooted. I unco...
