Re: Polytunnel growing v outside growing
I agree with the general tenet of all this,in terms of pest control, ease of management etc the tunnel offers a lot.It wouldn't do for me to not garden outside as well. For everyday you get cosy and dry in the tunnel, there's a boiling hot one where you'd rather be outside.

Re: How big is your fruit cage and what have you got in it?
Because of circumstances, dodgy health ,but mostly penury,I've planted the fruit before I put up the cage.I've a row of Gooseberries, then blackcurrants, then maincrop rasps then mixed row of red/white/blackcurrants then a raised bed of strawberries on bales, and finally a row of Autumn rasps. The rows a...

Way to go Tony,saves your back as well. I've had a lousy year,the garden's in a state,and I can barely do anything about it,as yet,but there's always something good.This year,it is Tomato F1 'Sweet Million',Massive,massive crop,great taste,still going strong.I have literally given up weighing them.T...

Re: rats in the chicken coop
The rats follow the food,so if you feed the chickens just as much as they will eat at one go,(maybe a couple of times a day) you will all but eliminate the problem. If you have half a dozen or so,then I'd consider keeping their feed indoors in airtight metal containers(old Swarfega drums are excellen...

Re: Rammed by a Ram
I was once bitten by a rampaging badger (I was 8,and walked innocently into a big shed, where it was skulking.) Although I didn't realise it at the time, subsequent experience leads me to be believe that from the rabid glaring look it gave me before sinking it's teeth into my leg and then running off,...

Re: Mulberries
They 're shallow rooted, and may well put up with a bit of root pruning.I've a bit of experience planting mature trees(much, much bigger than this one.)It's all in the aftercare, plant with a piece of flexi pipe at each corner of the pit, going down to the bottom of the rootball. Water through these eve...

Re: Rammed by a Ram
This might be the most unpopular thing I've ever written on here, but here goes. We kept goats at the old place for a good few years. Our billy, replaced every couple of years,ALWAYS joined us as a kid.We handled them continually.Sometimes they still got a bit iffy.I'm afraid to say,I would approach th...

FWITWIf we ever lose anything potted overwinter(chocolate Cosmos springs to mind)it's because I've forgotten to wrap the pots....i.e. the roots have frozen, absolute killer.

Sounds like they're worth a try.I get quite a problem here with the fly,do all the usual tricks, only enviromesh really works and I hate that stuff when it's wet.I grew 'Resistafly' this year, they DON'T taste like carrots! My thinking is..the kids will grow them 'cos they're a strange colour' and sav...
