Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Is that because people are more inclined to take holidays with their own accommodation? Understandable... But I hear that places in caravan parks are a lot more expensive than they used to be.

Re: To all those junk collectors

I'm sure there is. But then it comes down to the time/cost factor of collecting it in suitable quantities, and getting it to where it's needed.

Re: To all those junk collectors

My niece has just about finished building a straw house. But even that needs some external materials...

Re: To all those junk collectors

I think part of the problem is a lack of transport... Lots of reports on not enough drivers etc.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Sorry - yes, I remember hearing that name for it as well. It does look a bit like a cross between the two. I always tend to overcook it, though... :( It just takes minutes, if even that.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Perennial cauliflower! I had two plants last year, one died - simply disappeared - the other one is looking very healthy with several small heads coming along nicely. Will cut the first tomorrow for Sunday dinner. :)

Re: Growing in 2021

I think your way is really the way to go forward - it always annoys me when militant vegans shout we all have to stop eating meat to save the world... Cows (and other animals) have such an important part to play in restoring/maintaining soil health, and a healthy soil is most important for future pr...

Weather!

What's it like where you are? I suppose I'm not the only one battling with snow storms... Typical April weather: blizzard one minute, sunshine the next.

Fortunately, due to me not having done anything much in the garden yet, I haven't lost anything apart from daffodils.

Re: Time on my hands

I've just been too knackered after work - too lazy - too down in the dumps to do any cooking. I always start off in hopes at the weekend, even buying decent stuff for cooking meals for the week, but I've actually (and I never thought I'd had to admit that) had to throw out things that had gone off, ...

Re: Lock down clear outs

Yes, I noticed that. And I have been tempted at times, very occasionally. Most of it seems to be kids' stuff, and fancy ladies' wear - same as charity shops, really!

Re: Growing in 2021

Broad beans - that one type of seed Lidl don't do, and that's the only place I've been to so far where to buy them! What I call the yellow season has started. Crocus first, daffodils now, and dandelions and gorse all over the place. I'm still hoping to pick a portion or two of my kale. It was entire...

Re: Lock down clear outs

I've kind of lost touch with freecycle. There seemed to be more and more people who looked like dealers getting in on the thing. :(

Re: Supporting the Economy

Actually, I think a lot of the smaller shops are still stuck in the "good old times" when the man of the family went out to work and the woman had nothing better to do than the household and going shopping... Of course they could do their shopping between 9 and 5. And never needed to do it...
