Re: Home made cleaning products
Here in UK,you CAN get Borax in old fashioned ironmongers, but it's easily available on line. There's a lot of borax substitute about, but (as with the veal) I would avoid that.

Considering this kind of stuff isn't our forte,I'm really quite chuffed that we 've,for the last few months, made all our washing powder. It's really dead easy(or I wouldn't bother.)I get the kids to do the grating,it's very effective, pretty cheap, and you know what's in it.

Re: Chicken brawn
If the taste is predominately porky, crush some fennel seed and try that.I don't eat,or cook, anything that's had feathers, but er indoors tends to use a lot of rosemary with chicken etc.

Tony, like it or not,it's more than just cocking a snook at authority,it's one of the few ways you can maintain any form of control over your life. We are surrounded by so much 'choice',which is basically no choice whatsoever. If only half the lawn in the UK was cultivated I think the effect would be ...

Dunno Mike, and you're right of course,we're handcuffed to that roundabout. Ina,I'm sure you're right too.Re use/Recycle/Repair and your gardening MUST go hand in hand. Someone(and I really have forgotten who) once said something along the lines that the most revolutionary thing you can do is to grow...

Canned Heat
Something Ina touched on in the slow cooker thread made me rationalise some thoughts enough to try and share them. So cards on the table, conventional politics is of little interest to me,but it seems to me that most decisions I make are nevertheless political by default. Most of us are aware that mu...

Thanks for reviving this thread.
At present I'm only reading stuff I've already read. This weeks 3 are:'Waldon',by Thoreaux,'Travels with Charlie',by Steinbeck, and 'Christ Stopped at Eboli',by Carlo Levi.In each one you can feel the ground under your feet.

Re: Seasonal food
Yeah,I was thinking if you grow regular stuff in the tunnel, cos of dodgy conditions, you'd do well to bung the cordons there as well. Most of the commercial cherries planted recently round here have been in tunnel, not so much for the climate as to control P&D.These though are a high value crop. To...

You could be self /suff in apples if only you used cordons....!.work well in tunnels..
Many times,I think, when people have complained about the texture of fruit, they've been picked too early.Interestingly, for me,some apple varieties improve with keeping,eg.Annie Elizabeth.

Re: Seasonal food
The Spanish toms are out of season,it's just that the climate means that heat/light costs in the GH are far lower, making economic sense to grow them. There's a nursery not far from here where they grow toms 11 months of the year, there seems to be a decent market for them, our local greengrocer can't g...
