Beef Jerky Experiment
I bought a Pro-Q eco smoker a few years back (absolutely wonderful investment, home smoked cheese is so much better (and cheaper) than shop bought stuff), and have been meaning to use it to make some jerky for a while (we'll ignore the one attempt I made). A quick read of my smoking book says that b...

Re: inexpensive but delicious wine from tea...
Tea wine is one that I make regularly, although I've only made it from Morrison's own brand red label tea bags (ignoring the fruit tea bags). It always make a surprisingly good wine, both young and old (if I resist supping it for long enough). I tend to use a little over a kilo of sugar for a gallon...

Re: Make Charcoal
Never done it with wood, but I've had a little success with making charcloth. The basic idea is to burn it with very little oxygen. I know it used to be done by covering the wood with earth, lighting a small fire and keeping a very close eye on the whole thing, covering or making holes as needed. Wi...

Re: Containers for making cider
Yeah, they'd be fine to ferment in. You'd need to rig up some for of airlock for them (a piece of hose into a bucket of water would do the trick).

Re: Buy and sell precious metals?
I have no experience of doing it, so everything that follows is guess work. I know there are plenty of websites that buy and sell precious metals to people. And gold is supposed to be a pretty good investment as the price of gold should only ever increase. But I imagine, as a normal person, you woul...

Re: Paper Making Tips
First go looks pretty promising. I made a trial run yesterday, mainly to see whether I would need to add sizing to the paper (the plan was to use cornstarch for the sizing if needed). Playing around with the dried paper today and I am happy with it. Using a dip pens and India ink the bleeding is com...

Paper Making Tips
I recently had a go at making my own notebook, using printer paper for the leaves and making the covers from some old cardboard an an old shirt. I was quite pleased with what I ended up with (room for a lot of improvement, but not bad for a first go). But the printer paper definitely let the whole t...

Re: What's wrong with fennel?
It does grown into a monster (or mine did at least). But the rosemary and chives near it still thrived (then again they are pretty hardcore growers).
