Re: Shredded paper

I have dug shredded paper into the ground to break up claggy soil... it looks ugly for a while then disappears. I use a cheap stationery box paper-shredder on all manner of scrap paper. Haven't tried it for chicken bedding yet, but as I am running out of wood-shavings, I think I'll give it a go. And...

Re: knackered lead-acid batteries

What's a battery pulser? my charge controller does pulsing (PCM) when the battery voltage rises when you say "charge at 14.4V or 24v" - what do you mean? the voltage is set by the battery surely? if you connect a battery at 11.6V to a source at 12v, 14v or 24v, the battery voltage starts a...

Re: 5 "schnapps"

looking at the lemon balm recipe... I'd have thought you'd be better off blitzing the leaves in a blender with vodka then letting them steep in a jar.... increased surface area to extract the essence?

Re: How big is your fruit cage and what have you got in it?

Mine is about 3 x 5 metres ... raspberries and loganberries mainly. I messed up with the strawberries by letting them get too overgrown with weeds. The blitz-weeding experiment at the start of the season didn't really work, as by then the strawbs were too thin and weak.

Re: rats in the chicken coop

yep - shot another this morning, but again it took 3 pellets. Is that more humane than drowning? I don't know. Is rat poison humane? one snuffed it by just by being left alone in the trap for a day. I've been down the council pest control route before - all they do is leave bait boxes out and come b...

Re: rats in the chicken coop

I take the point about excessive food in the coop. However this time of year the apples are falling off the trees and there is other (rotting) food about and the buggers are invading the rest of the garden too... rat-holes appearing all over the place... these "humane traps" are just brill...

rats in the chicken coop

I've been having a rat problem in the chicken coop - they keep raiding the chickens' feed, proliferating and raiding more. When I saw 6 in there one day, I decided to declare RatWars. As well as the baitbox outside the coop with ratpoison, I bought a .177 Webley Rebel pump-action airgun from the loc...

Lovely colour, but very slow to clear. Tastes nice enough, but not thrilling.

I ended up blending mine with apple - resulting in a dark-rose coloured light wine, but a bit tart. Will let it mellow a while I think

Re: Cider yeast

I'm afraid in the past I've always used "general purpose" homebrew shop yeast for cider....

so now I have bought un sachet of cider yeast (with sweetener as predicted) and have some on the go.... lete see what results
