Re: What's a Self Sufficient Christmas

What I consider an Ish Christmas and what we're doing are very different this year I'm afraid. Even though we're not big on Christmas, generally, it all seems a bit flat this year. Under more normal circumstances I would have grown more and made more. I've knitted the gal a blanket (she's moving in ...

Re: Got the Signoff...

It's probably scuppered many peoples' plans, Viper. Sounds like you're thinking things through and erring on the side of caution until all becomes clearer - whenever that is. :dontknow: Never a bad idea.

I hope all goes well for you. Indeed, for us all!

Re: Brexit

It is, indeed, very nice compost - and at least we've got enough to last a while, as well continuing to make our own. As for best of a bad bunch, I think it was the only option - even then the courier mucked us about (pun intended) as he'd misread the order as 5 bags (probably cheaper to refund than...

Re: Using recycled plastic

Cellophane's compostable - made from cellulose.

Re: Brexit

At the start of lockdown we'd just bought the greenhouse and were nearly ready to pot on the tomatoes. We had no means of buying any compost locally so got a ton (literally) online. OH didn't inform me until after it arrived that it was peat-based, from Ireland. I was a bit cross! Fortunately we had...

Re: Using recycled plastic

In our bakery we sold bags of biscuits, made of cellophane. They kept fresh for ages. No need for plastic.

Re: Using recycled plastic

I have one recycled plastic raised bed - one of these special offers from a gardening magazine. I think otherwise they're quite expensive. I agree though that they're robust and we've had this one pretty much as long as we've been up here, it's been moved a few times and doesn't seem any the worse f...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Try having a look on Ebay, ina, they'll show you if it's available in Germany. It's amazing what you can find.

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

I agree, next year is going to be interesting! (The mother of all understatements). I have to admit to struggling to keep politics out of it but I'll try. One thing I found this year is the price of secondhand clothes, on Ebay, rose dramatically. I'm guessing there were a few reasons - people ...

Re: Blackberry in pot

I think blackberries take quite a while to establish, ours was at least two years before it even put on much growth, never mind fruiting. This year we were picking right up to the end of November, so it may be a bit stunted by the pot but will probably catch up. If you decide to plant it out make su...

Re: Self sufficientish 2020

Plot 1 sounds like it'll be great. We've got all our seeds and compost ready. Still need to build a couple of new beds but they take no time at all once the ground's clear. That's a bit hard at the moment - we seem to be getting a lot of frost at the moment, which we don't get so much usually. We've...

Re: growing potatoes

I think it's too late, but if you've got some chitting then stick them in a container of compost and see.

I'd keep them somewhere fairly sheltered and just keep the compost moist.

Re: It really is difficult at the moment

I've just been to Inverness for a few days. I called in the Edinburgh Woollen Mills closing down sale - nothing there to buy, for me. I was very surprised that a lot of it was 100% acrylic and the one woollen cardigan which I liked had been reduced from £125 to £99. I'm sure they need to make what m...

Re: Useful tips for starting on a self sufficientish path

I think that's why the -ish bit is so important. It's easy to forget all the things we can do. I think I'm very lucky - an aunt taught me to knit and crochet when very young, I did needlework O level and had lessons in spinning yarn as a birthday present a few years back (still very amateurish, but ...
