Re: No rubbish fortnight

I look the idea, so I've been looking around to see how it might work. The biggest issue for me that I found was butter. I avoid palm oil, so that's all margarines out. Butter comes in foil, that has a plastic lining, and therefore is not recyclable. I did see a butter stick in a kind of paper wrapp...

Re: Bonsai Trees-Beginners

Sounds good, except for one little detail-I don't like grapefruit, and don't know anyone who does! Typical.

Re: Make my own pasta?

Here's hoping! It would be nice to only buy what we need...but it doesn't really work for capitalism.

Re: No rubbish fortnight

Has anyone tried this challenge again-since 2006? I think I would give it a go...anyone else game?

Re: Make my own pasta?

This all came about as I'm trying to avoid plastic. There is pasta sold in cardboard boxes, but they are much more expensive, then I thought-why not make my own? I bake already anyway, and I'm now hoping to start growing some food. :-)

Re: For saving money around the house!

Instead of heating at night time, I use a hot water bottle, and I reuse the same water each time. I made draught excluders for my doors. I have rechargeable batteries so I don't have to keep buying new ones. I only use my wall sconce lights, as they are eco bulbs with a long life span, as opposed to...

Bonsai Trees-Beginners

I have a Bonsai Tree Kit, but have no idea where to start. I have Red Maple, Silver Birch and Mountain Pine seeds. Would anyone know which of these would be the best for a complete beginner at bonsai? Instructions seem to suggest the Silver Birch (I had planned to avoid the beautiful Red Maple, as I...

Uses for 5 litre plastic water bottles?

Anyone got any clever ideas for empty 5 litre plastic water bottles? I have one as a storage point for my chargers and wires, and thought of either plant pots or plates. I have 2 spare at the moment, with another four in the future. Really don't want to throw them out (recycling not available for pl...

Re: What is Britain eating?

I love the suggestion of using the pot from the previous store bought dead herbs to grow your own ones in. They never seem to last, do they? I reckon that's deliberate. They'd soon be losing herb sales if everyone grew their own. We used to grow tomatoes when I was a kid, we also had an apple tree (...

Re: Rebel

You're not alone Weedo. I had a smartphone once. It didn't last the month before I waged war on it. I call them smarta**e phones, cos they are constantly trying to second guess and undermine you. Texting is a nightmare! My friend calls me on their smarta**e phone, and I get put on hold and cut off a...

Re: The not buying new compact?

I'd like to try making my own hygiene products too. Soap bars and toothpaste to start. I do the unshaven hippy, but I do use soap, deodorant and shampoo. Never really bothered with conditioner.

Re: What is Britain eating?

Sorry, I wasn't sure if I should post outside links or not. The amount of work to be done in a household is never-ending (my bug bears are hoovering and washing up), especially if you have animals and/or children. My plan was to be a stay at home mummy/housewife, but as I'm now single, I may have to...

Re: The not buying new compact?

I really want to try this, see how long I can last. Bathing items come under health and safety items, I guess? But I wonder if I could get mine only from charity shops, as they always seem to stock that sort of thing. I wonder...

Re: The not buying new compact?

Although we have gumtree over here, it's not that well used, as it is in England. Plus in England I could get public transport to other places easily. Can't do that here. One bus every 4 hours!

Re: The not buying new compact?

Due to my lack of transport and not so central location, I also find it difficult to source second hand electricals. So many charity shops won't sell them because they don't have anyone to test their safety.
