I know - I try to console myself with that, too!

Re: What are you harvesting now?

I never seem to be able to grow proper radishes... What am I doing wrong? They are supposed to be just about the easiest crop to grow! And I love eating them, so always end up buying.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

I finally have runner beans! It must have been the lack of water earlier in the season... Now, of course, we are about to have a lack of sunshine. Or daylight, even...

In a way it's been done for ages... Maybe not always over quite that distance.

Re: Old shoes - what to do?

Cheap boots can't be re-soled, unfortunately... I've had the same problem in the past. When I bought my first decent pair of walking boots not long ago, the sales assistant actually pointed out that these can be re-soled! Mind you, they are so sturdy that I don't think that'll be necessary in my lif...

Re: DIY Energy

Considering they even have solar meadows here in Scotland, I think that is the way electricity generation will go... I still think they should concentrate on using less rather than producing more.

Re: DIY Energy

I run everything on electricity. Ever since I've moved into this house (council bungalow), I've only used the storage heaters (oldfashioned type) very few times; otherwise I have a dehumidifier (which makes the place a bit warmer, with being less damp), and a very small fan heater that I place close...

Re: The cellar !!

Did you make any wine from brambles Ina? (How is that pronounced - 'eena' or eye-na'?) It's eena, as it's short for Bettina... No, I didn't make wine. But I did make some jam, for friends, as I try not to eat this kind of sugary stuff. Actually, I made some without added sugar as well,...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

That sounds like you have a fairly big garden? In my little place, it's always just one of each... Have to cut back my currants this year, too, to give them a chance to rejuvenate. It's mostly for the birds, anyway.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

I'm not getting masses, either - but as usual I planted them rather late, so they were slow to start but now keep producing at a slow rate.

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Brambles! And I've "harvested" the one and so far only runner bean... :) There are a few more on it now. No idea what went wrong earlier. Oh, and courgettes, of course...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

Definitely not too hot - there must be some insects, as the courgettes are doing ok, right next to them... It's not been very cold, wet or windy, either. It's a mystery. (Actually, I think I saw one bean pod yesterday!!! Hooray!)

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

I am wondering why I don't seem to have any runner beans this year. They are flowering quite nicely, but no beans. Did I plant them too late? The weather has been fine, mostly...

Re: Self Sufficient 2021

I'm sorry to hear you lost your dog. But we can't do anything about old age... I envy you your peach tree! But if you are trying to lose your "muffin top", be aware that fruit has a lot of sugar... When I worked in strawberry and cherry picking (a long time ago), my boss said he always put...

Re: Thrifty self sufficiency?

A former colleague of mine used to buy anything yellow label - and then bring it in to work and distribute it to all and sundry, whether they wanted it or not! :)
