Growing in 2021

I made a start today with seed chitting. Started off 2 varieties of French beans, one dwarf and one climbing, 2 varieties of tomatoes and a couple of courgettes. All are destined for my heated greenhouse as it was a reasonable success last year, and I still have about a quarter of a tank of left ove...

Re: Self sufficientish 2020

It's pretty much the "same as usual" here, except I now have all next year's seeds that I'm ever likely to want. Just waiting and hoping that the strawberry plants that I've ordered will get here before the end of the year. Just planted a row of early potatoes in the now empty back bed in ...

Re: Plumbing problem

All the soil pipe fittings that I've ever come across, and I have worked with quite a few, are all push fit. All the fittings have a gasket inside which seals it. If you have a 90 degree bend from the ground to the back of your loo, and you want to disconnect it, it probably means unscrewing your lo...

Re: Brexit

Well yes, I grow some from saved seed, especially my Charlottes. But if I fancy trying a different variety it will be a problem.
Just another restriction imposed on me because of something I was denied a vote on.

Moan over

Re: Brexit

Even more doom and gloom, not only for Ireland but Scotland too. A ban on seed potatoes or anything else with UK soil attached from January 1st to EU. I hope the trade importers get the seed potatoes delivered before the end of the year. https://www.independent.ie/business/farming/news/farming-news/...

Re: Brexit

Just been looking at this in some detail. What I found is ..... THE (Irish) DEPARTMENT OF Agriculture has advised “Anyone importing seeds, plants or plant products from outside of the EU needs to be registered with us and consignments require a phytosanitary certificate to prevent the introduction o...

Re: Pineapples

I had a miniature pomegranate bush in my tunnel. It grew to about 7 feet tall and about the same wide, and it managed to have one flower two years running, then no more. The flowers dropped off just after I noticed them. I dug it out back in the winter, enough was enough ... after 10 years of pamper...

Re: Pineapples

The saga continues  The old stumps have been languishing in the greenhouse since last August, unloved and un-watered, but this morning I noticed what must be one of these fabled sideshoots that I've been reading about. The plant had been rained upon underneath a vent, so that probably s...

Re: Brexit

Not quite so worried now, I've found a very nice French company that sells lots of seeds, except peas and beans for some reason. Bought some onion seed from them and it arrived about 2 days later. Plus there is an Irish lady called "seedaholic" who sells just about every variety, been buyi...

Re: Here we go again

We've been back in lock down since last weekend, not that it worries me  I think I have been off the property 3 times since the first lock down on March 16th, and it's not bothered me at all. Of course I have the luxury of having the greenhouses and tunnels on the property, plus my radios, so p...

Re: First test for new greenhouse

Pleased that the greenhouse survived again. Nothing much happened down here either, mainly due to the trees that have all grown higher now and provide shelter from every direction now. Still windy down here and will be for a few days, but high pressure covering us from Wednesday onwards, so will be ...

Re: Brexit

Knowing which seed company is not owned by another is something I'm not good at .... Dobies and Suttons are both in Paignton, Devon, and have virtually identical catalogues and seed varieties. One variety is Dobies "Crimson" blight resistant tomato varieties and they are all in both catal...

Re: What are you harvesting now?

Pretty much the same as last time, cabbages, broccoli, carrots, white beet, mooli radish, leeks, tomatoes and still picking autumn raspberries. Re your PSB Flo, I grew PSB every year since Adam was a lad up until 2 years ago. For the last 5 years or so my PSB and Kale were smothered with mealy bugs ...

Re: Brexit

Suttons Seeds website says that they will post to the EU but there are various hoops to jump through. May change of course and they just haven't got round to it. Suttons and Dobies are the same company Flo, and those shipping details are the ones in force at the moment. They may of course stay the ...

Re: Brexit

Thanks GA, yes I saw that, BUT ... have you looked at Brown Envelope Seeds web site? They are sort of "just down the road" to me, as in about 20 miles away. I've been there on open days and their daughter is now our local MP or TD as we have here. But they have very little in the way of va...
