We love hearing from you, so here is your chance. Introduce yourself and tell us what makes you selfsufficient 'ish'. Go on don't be shy, we welcome one and all. You can also tell us how you heard about us if you like.

Hello from Australia!

Post: # 287392Post bobby70 »

G'day.
I have just purchased 10 acres in Victoria, Australia, and am hoping to be fairly self sufficient. Rainwater, septic sewage system, solar power all in place. Beautiful homestead with open fireplaces.
My plans? Build a machinery shed, establish an orchard (only 1 lemon tree there now!), build a hothouse and garden beds. Expand the dam and reforest the majority of the land with Australian natives.
Wish me luck!

Hi Bobby, welcome to Ish.

Your set up sounds idyllic (well maybe not the open fires bit - they take some cleaning!). Have you had a look at anything on permaculture or food forests? You'd have the perfect set-up for starting something there. Have a look at anything by Geoff Lawton or Bill Mollison (the daddy of permaculture) - both fellow Australians. Of course I may be preaching to the choir

It does look beautiful... Just had a look online. But what you call cold - ha, it seems to be about the same there as it is here now, and we are at the height of summer, more or less! Bucketing it down at the moment, but we desperately needed the rain. Same forecast for tomorrow, and - typical - the place where I work at the moment is having a BBQ tomorrow...
