How do we regard tinned fruit in this situation? Much traveled but at least the packing can be recycled

Oh yes, what about bottles of wine?
Here I am totally self sufficient in veg, partially self sufficient in fruit, but totally non self sufficient in wine.
I know the bottles are easily recycled, but a lot of the wine I buy is antipodean, Oz & NZ, and by no stretch of imagination can they be regarded as "local"
If I had to stick to local it would have to be Guinness.

There's excellent local wine in Scotland. Not quite as local to you as to me - but try Cairn o'Mohr...

Elderberry? Bramble? Elderberry is almost like port... And one of the best I ever made was black currant.

I go with you Odsox! No one - despite their claims - can make a really good, soft, bulls blood red in a cool climate. Even in Oz we have people claiming they can do this at higher altitudes but the taste test proves them wrong; they usually taste "green" and unfinished.
We also brew Guinness here but its not my drop

Err, no.
I'm constantly digging up self inflicted plastic. Lots of very fine fishing line from when I mulched and then dug in fresh seaweed. Also tea bag plastic that went through the compost bin, I didn't realise the "paper" tea bags were lined with plastic.
That one is sorted now as we now use 100% paper tea bags from Aldi.

I also have another one, not plastic but glass. I don't know what went on in the field before I bought it but it's littered with broken brown beer bottle glass, the amount of times I've cut my fingers weeding and planting.
I truly have shed blood growing vegetables.

Hmm blood and fish - all you need is the bone for decent fertiliser there Mr Odsox sir.

Already sorted Ms Flo, all bones during the winter months get burned on our wood burner, then wood ash and bone ash get spread on the soil in spring.
Summer months the bones get baked in the oven and either wait for winter or get incinerated on the next bonfire.
We don't do landfill waste here at Chez Odsox.

You know - when the boxes of teabags are used up, I might even look at a teapot. Wonder if that could be a Christmas present request. Would make a change from the allotment needs .....

Go for it Flo - I gave up tea bags quite a while ago. Take a look at Zero Japan; they make great solid ceramic teapots in all sizes. I have been using mine for about 5 years now - BUT not cheap

The landlord is threatening to come and replace the kitchen units and knock out the wall to what was a small coal store passage (don't want to call it the back passage into the garden but that's what it is).Anyway - digging into the cupboards as it, strange things have appeared. A whole load of plastic snap lock containers! A trip to the charity shop or freecycle? Freecycle seems not to be very active. So the charity shop I think. Hmm - what am I doing collecting plastic that I don't use?

I think we've all got a few of those. I know I've kept some "just in case", and keeping always seems a better option than tossing.

GA - I still have some containers left but there's some "just in case" and a shed load.

It's plastic free July and I'm freezing excess broad beans and peas for the future. Of course into plastic bags. Seems to be no other option. If the supermarkets had something else than plastic to see their freezer contents in we minor people might have a similar option but it seems that till the big people get themselves together we little mushrooms are going to be kept in the dark and left alone.
