First test for new greenhouse

Post: # 293925Post Green Aura »

Apparently we'll be getting 50mph gusts over the weekend. We'll see how robust the new greenhouse is and how effective the windbreak fence is (we've only built half of it so keep your fingers crossed).

I'll attach a photo when I can work out why it keeps posting it upside down. Hopefully not a portent of doom.

It would be sad to see such an excellent greenhouse doing a kite act. Fingers crossed.

You're not kidding, Flo. We put a lot of work into it and built that fab cold frame on the side. We were hoping for a respite from the winds for a while longer.

Well it was pretty windy down here last night, and still is, and supposed to be like this for another 24 hours.
But, so far everything has survived, including all my aerials.
Very nice looking greenhouse, I really hope it still looks like that tomorrow.

Are those tomatoes inside?

Tomatoes on the ground and peppers on the staging.

We've topped off the fence by about 50cm, which will take it just above eaves height. Hopefully that should do the trick.

All survived admirably.

We hoped to build the other part of the fence and gate over the weekend but, although the high winds dropped, it was still too wet and windy to be carting around 8' planks.

So we had our traditional bank holiday weekend of holing up in the house, boiler lit, and watched DVDs.

(Why is the weather always horrible on bank holiday weekends?)

Jolly good, I'm glad it survived intact.
All OK here too, just one apple tree has scorched leaves on the windward side. Oh, and our front house windows were opaque with a coating of salt.
But the windows are now clean as our Monday (not a bank holiday) weather was gentle soft rain all day with a slight southerly breeze, which washed our windows perfectly.

Just for a minute I thought that Odsox had been visited by his regular window cleaner - oh is that the rain then?

We've not had enough rain to wash the windows up here in May. But it's good to see that the greenhouse stood the first test.

The greenhouse survived Storm Aiden. It circled from the east in the morning and the west later as it passed cross. Apparently we had gusts of up to 80mph.

The protective fencing fared less well - the supporting butresses moved so the fence was at an angle. Temporarily fixed no - no breakages fortunately, but it'll have to wait until after Hurricane Zeta, today for a more permanent solution.!

I think we'll have to dig out and fill with concrete - not ideal but I can't see any other way. However, I'm pleased with it's performance and the greenhouse looks to be protected from all sides.

Pleased that the greenhouse survived again.
Nothing much happened down here either, mainly due to the trees that have all grown higher now and provide shelter from every direction now.
Still windy down here and will be for a few days, but high pressure covering us from Wednesday onwards, so will be able to catch up with any work that needs doing.

I assume that moving plans has been shelved for a bit now?

For a while, Odsox, until all this debacle is over anyway. Like you we're safe and not bothered about leaving the house particularly so further lockdown isn't much of an issue.

Most of our friends are here, with only a few further afield, and general feeling towards "incomers", forcing house prices up, is running a little high at the moment.

We're also growing some decent tomatoes at last!
