Broken screen on laptop

Tomorrow's World was a show on BBC TV about innovations and tech stuff and I thought a good name for our computing and tech section.

Broken screen on laptop

Post: # 73134Post Andy Hamilton »

I stupidly picked up my laptop by the screen yesterday and bust it. Can this be fixed? I think the LCD has been shattered or something as a small section of the screen works and there is a big white patch working down the screen where the display should be. I am hoping I can find the guarantee and am covered!

No idea... but you could use it temporarily if you've got a free standing pc monitor.

try keeping it on for a while (I know, not very eco-friendly...) it might just need to "come back to life"... if not definitely claim on the insurance!!

Unless you can fix it yourself if you get a replacement screen, the cost of fixing a laptop is astronomical because they break so easily once opened...

good luck!

If you do find that you can't fix the LCD and have to stick with an external monitor you lose the portability but at least you can console yourself with the fact that laptops tend to be much more energy efficient than most desktop systems. The exceptions (like my very cute little friend, the Mac Mini) tend to be built using laptop-type technology but without the built in I/O devices.

Well I opted for the most eco-freindly and got it fixed. They used a screen off a laptop that had totally broken so I am quite happy that my stupidity did not add to the lines of production. Still it cost me 175 quid so the happiness was rather short lived. Makes me thing that a years household insurance might be the way forward.

Note to self, never pick up laptop by screen.

im going to show this thread to my dad as he insists on picking up his (and mine when i lend him it!) by the screen. maybe the cost of £175 (and probably more) will put him off!
