Butterflies

Post: # 294135Post Odsox »

Has anybody noticed a lack of butterflies this year?
I know I shouldn't celebrate the fact but there have been no Cabbage White or Tortoiseshell butterflies down here this year.
How do I know?
Because my Brussels sprout plants are now about 3 feet tall and have no caterpillars whatsoever.
Other years by now they would all have lacy leaves and needing me to pick loads of caterpillars off every day, despite their fleece covering.
As I said, I know I shouldn't celebrate but it does make a nice change.

Oh the cabbage whites here are playing kissing games but there are not very many of them.

The multitude of sparrows had a go at some small PSB before it was netted - is returning, was late, may come to nothing more than cabbage leaves but we'll see.

One cabbage white so far - not that I miss them... But hardly any others, either. I had noticed that.

No cabbage whites but we've had loads of peacock butterflies. Never seen so many. They spent most of the nice weather we had several weeks back sun-bathing on our white walls.

Pleased to report a good selection of butterflies this year in the West Midlands. As you say though, my brussels are doing pretty well...
