Nature's setbacks

Feeling a little unhappy right now as all my outside veg has been destroyed by a freak hailstorm we had yesterday here in Switzerland... Living in a small apartment it's really diffcult to grow anything, but my landlady had given us permission to put a few pots outside at the bottom of the apartment building. We had two pots with pepper plants, two with tomato plants (which had already started flowering), a pot of carrots, another with onions and one with mangetout. After the hailstorm they were just completely ripped to shreds. The carrots and onions might be alright since the important bit is underground but I guess the rest will not recover. I feel very discouraged

Trying to look on the bright side our two windowboxes were fine (protected by the overhang of the roof) so we still have lettuces radishes and herbs.

oh fizzy - that's desperate - you have my full sympathies - am glad something survived though.
We've had hail showers too and a week of strong winds but most of my plants seem to be surviving thank goodness - nothing as disastrous as what you've had.
Hopefully June will bring better weather

Oh, poor you! That's so sad.

I know it's not quite the same, but could you buy some 'ready made' replacements from a nursery?

I know how you feel as we had two violent storms with hail in the last week and my aubergines got ripped to pieces - the pepper leaves seemed to survive but a lot of plants were flopping over - and I'd just planted out three of my tomatoes which looked rather sad afterwards! My hosta looks a complete mess too. I don't know how big your carrots are but mine are just tiny seedlings and they survived OK, anything that was a bit flattened like them and spring onions I just 'fluffed' up a bit and they perked up.

Dreadful winds since then and I desperately need to plant out my toms which are way too tall for the cold frame now, but if I take them out they will probably snap in two!

This weather is really wierd as we've gone from having the wood burner on on Saturday to sweltering and putting on shorts on Sunday, storms that night, two days hot then back to really cold and putting on the leccy blanket again!!!

MMM, I think you were right, my carrots are looking so much better (they fluffed up like you said). The mangetout has completely died, so I think I'll plant some new. I'm leaving the tomotoes and peppers to take their chances - they are still green anyway so there must be some life there! But perhaps I will go and get some "replacements" too... They take too long to grow again from seed.

Might be a good idea and let's hope we don't get any more of that hail!
