Worst job ever

Post: # 251792Post Andy Hamilton »

Strikes me that the job I have now is alright, especially compared to the jobs I've had. Ok, worst jobs ever in reverse order.

5. Double glazing selling
4. pouring mince into a hopper in a - 5c food factory
3. making boxes in a Burton warehouse at 17 years old and having the nickname of stig of the dump
2. Putting holes in metal bits for filing cabinets, surrounded by school bullies
1. Sitting in a 2m squared area full of soot, used by British steel, cleaning it out, cramped and full of soot, soot that seeped inside your pores, being black for 8 days despite 5-20 showers, then finding out that not only don't you get paid but that British Steel won't even use that area again.

Folding and stacking cardboard boxes in a sweltering boiler room in Debanham's in Norwich. The emptied boxes arrived via a shoot and I had to cut the tape that bound them, fold them flat, and stack them. That doesn't sound too bad, but it was hot and filthy work. I did a ten hour shift with three 15 minute breaks. Sometimes I'd go two, boring hours without a customer; other times I'd be quite literally burried in boxes.

Packing tights in the wilds of Leicestershire. Piecework (as you'd imagine extremely poor rates), which involved sorting and quality controlling batches of 20 dozen tights as well as wrapping them in their individual cardboard covers.

Never buy expensive tights ladies, they come out of the same box as the cheap ones - maybe the cardboard is better quality, the tights sure aren't!

Telesales for a burgler alarm company - cold calling, commission only. Didn't make a penny :( Had one particularly stroppy bloke tell me that he was going to complain to my boss for calling him so I said to him "I'll tell you what you can do with your complaint - STICK IT down on paper, SHOVE IT into and envelope and RAM IT into the letter box, and I'm sure it will get here!" I didn't go back after that shift!

Slicing chopped pork and corned beef on the deli in Safeways, nothing like being coated in processed meat products on a Saturday morning with a hangover mmm (student days).

I've done a lot of pretty grim jobs but I only hated two of them.

The worst was a temp job checking that the labels on wine bottles were straight. The smell of glue was so intense I only lasted a morning. Most of the full time staff were really odd (not surprising as they sniffed glue all day and everyday) and spent most of their time showing me repeatedly how to remove a wonky label in a suggestive manner.

The second worst was helping my mum clean the British Legion as a kid. On the plus side, the smell of stale tobacco and ashtrays crammed full with cigarettes put me off smoking for most of my teenage years.

Here's a few I can remember:

Doing continental shifts making tennis balls in Barnsley.

Making burgers at 'The Huckleberry Charcol Pit' for 50p an hour (Liverpool).

Pulling frozen leeks at 7 am on piecework (Evesham).

On the VIP gate at a County show(prat in a Jag insisted on going in though he hadn't the
pass,it got heated,I threatened him a bit, then I got arrested .Turned out he was the local MP).

I don't have to persuade my kids to do their best at school, they just look at how my life turned out!

filing the rough edges off false teeth. I was only 18 euch the thought of false teeth was gross let alone handling them. Joy and good fortune I fell off my horse and had a badly broken leg off work for weeks so they sacked me

Worst job was working in TKMAXX before Christmas. I began to think that there was some kind of brainwashing going on with the shop trying to dumb us down and stop us from thinking for ourselves by playing the same Christmas music over and over again.
Also hated cleaning the inside of canal boats because I got a terrible allergic reaction on my skin due to all the cleaning products.

Financial Accountant at Farepak. It was a terrible culture, lots of bullying. We worked stupidly long hours on acquisitions that, ultimately, caused it to collapse. It all ended for me when I went into the office on my day off, thinking I was going to discuss a promotion, and ended up sitting on the back doorstep with my box of personal possessions, waiting for a lift home, as my replacement was escorted in through the front door.

Still, the good news is that I got my pay off, and she was the one who had bricks thrown at her house by disgruntled customers when they lost their money.

I was working at a call centre for a big internet provider once. Now you would think they had their customer support working pretty neat, but on the contrary. They were using a completly messed up system where you had to ask some other department every two or so hours because some of the customer data was not acessible from your workplace, or you needed supervisor's authorization. All that while the callers got more and more impatient, which is understandable as they had to pay the call. And the payment was ...humble. Fortunately I soon found a better call center job (yep!) where we were a smaller team but had all the necessary data stored in a cloud network and the general atmosphere was not half as stressful.

My job as a waiter was not exactly fun, but not terrible either. Just not fulfilling

Fortunately that's all over now. :sunny:

Working in sub zero temperatures in a meat packing factory where the meat had more personality than my co workers. The place was a front for organised crime.

Working as a tank cleaner in a dockyard cleaning the tanks of oil tankers
