you laugh at the nose warmer, but I knitted one on request for my sister a few years ago. I knitted it as a joke because she was complaining about having a cold nose. It's now in the camping kit and she wears it every time we go camping...

I was watching Ray Mears the other day and he was saying to put any little downy feathers you find inside your gloves to insulate them better.
There is also hand and boot warmers you can get when you go skiing. They are little packets, like the size of a tea bag, with some chemicals inside which heat up when you put them in your gloves or boots. But they run out once all the chemicals have reacted and you have to buy more, so it's not very ish.

I have been wearing my muck boots for a while now, they are brilliant, I can go out for hours at a time, no more coming in to warm up, so thanks Terri for putting me onto them, I want to be buried in my muck boots (or composted probably more ish)

I got hubby some muckers for Christmas and he really, really loves them. It's no longer a chore to shut the chickens in of an evening and last night he said that whereas before his feet felt like ice-blocks, now they are so toasty it makes the rest of him feel cold .

I didn't buy one but i bet you could easily make one if you can knit or crochet. Then I thought to check flea bay as it seems they sell everything there and yes, they have them but what a price! £6 - £7+ now who's having the last laugh? or try etsy maybe?

I expect there are some knitters here who will take commissions.

to knit a nose-warmer:

If you know how to make a short-row toe or nose for a sock, make one and then attach strings to the sides.

I just made one to see how well it works:

CO 15 st (I'm using a light DK weight yarn and UK 3.5mm needles).

1. k all the way across
2. p all the way across
3. k14, w&t
4. p13, w&t

Keep reducing and wrapping and turning until you have 3 st left.

5. k4, pick up wrap, w&t
6. p5, picking up wrap, w&t.

Keep going until you've picked up all 15 st.

7. k all the way across
8. p all the way across
9. cast off

Add strings to the sides.

or: for the long instructions and a more pointy nosewarmer:

Cast on 1.

1. Kfb (2st)
2. (and all even rows) purl
3. k1, kfb (3st)
5. k1, kfb, k1 (4st)
7. k1, kfb, kfb, k1 (6st)
9. k1, kfb, k2, kfb, k1 (8st)

Carry on in pattern (k1, kfb, k..., kfb, k1) until piece is desired length (just past tip of nose to cheek).

Cast off.

Make 3.

Sew together to make a pyramid and then add strings to the edge of 1 of the triangles so it can be tied around the head.

that's how I made my sister's one. The short row toe one is quite good, but she found that the triangle pyramid shape stayed on easier.

The one in the pic is crocheted and I'm not that good at crocheting - especially anything in the round or pointy, so a better crocheter than me might have a better pattern

can use carryer between 2 layer of socks
worlks well for me when doing 100 miles on motor bike in the coldest weather
and use the latex gloves under bike gloves make a big differance

My partner used to wear ladies tights under his trousers when out in the cold on his motorbike - might have got some funny looks down the orspital if he'd come off, there's probably a website for that kind of thing
