How do I stop cats using my garden as a toilet?

lion poo works - you can get it from a nearby zoo/wild life park.
also human urine, presumably male is a stronger scent.
coffee grinds can be spread over the dug area, cats don't like the bits getting in their paws, ground egg shell also works in this way.
then there are flavour/scent things, like orange peel (and presumably any citrus fruit).
as others have said, netting, or spikey twigs over the top.
you can get motion sensitive water sprinklers which will squirt the cat when it's in position - these appear to work quite well, but expensive option.
get yourself an outdoor dog? or more cats?

Aww thanks peeps for the fantastic suggestions.Much appreciated!Well as it turned out,I had a bag of lemons in the fridge.I carefully peeled them all,diced the peel so it would spread further,and then sprinkled this on my new borders.It has worked extremely well!No more cats digging in my borders,which equals no more cat pee and crap! Come Autumn I think I might collect some dried brambles and put them in the shed for next spring!They're free and sound effective. Thanks all!
