Today I Dug Up...

Today I was digging around the back of the cob nut tree, in preparation for what will eventually be a shed base. I found...

• A set of ancient, buried scales. I can't deny that finding a plunger-like submerged metal object gave me the jitters initially.

• One rather sorry looking bag of coal

• About 500 plastic disposable cups - perfect for seedlings

• One stainless steel bowl - perhaps for an animal? Cleaned up nice

• A sheet of corrugated iron

• One broken glass pane

• Some netting

• Some chicken wire

In about three barrowloads. This is going to take some time.

It's always a struggle to see the new year in.

We have a bonfire the size of a van built to burn, so that'll keep us entertained for sure this evening.

Wow, what a haul. I’ve dug up various things in various gardens, not all as useful, though. 500 glass bottles, various car engine parts, a shed (in bits), an aluminium greenhouse frame (no glass), a silver plated kilt pin (with no silver left ), various body parts (plastic) and the most useful thing was a 5lb weight. Makes you wonder what else is down there?

The most interesting thing I ever found was about 30 golf balls. And no, I don't play golf.

I have also found golf balls. I think I may be digging my way through an old shed at the moment, but it's so decomposed it's actually not quite possible to tell!

How does this stuff get down there? That's what I'd love to know.

Also, anybody know what to do with a wheelie bin full of broken glass? I feel like it's recyclable, but have yet to work out where I can take it.

That's a tricky one. You obviously can't put it into bottle banks. What about a craft glass blower? Can they recycle it? I know of one in North Wales - the Glassblobbery in Corwen. It might be worth dropping him an email. He may know of someone closer, or if it's usable at all.

Otherwise your local council might be able to help.

Why not? As long as it fits through the holes - the lid might even be open...

Our bottle banks are those old dome things - they don't have a lid. I'm guessing that shoving a wheelibins worth of small pieces of broken glass, through a 6" hole might not be an option.

Might depend on the size of the wheelie bin!
