What you doing for solstice?

Post: # 42962Post Andy Hamilton »

I am sure that there are a few of us on here that will be celebrating the winter solctice, I wonder if in fact some of us will be going to the same place?

Not 100% sure what I am doing for it, or even if I will get my act together this year to celebrate for the first time. (yep, always mean to but end up forgeting the day).

I shall be freezing by a*se (word of the day) off. There isn't any heating here and there is already deep snow on the mountains.

I will be celebrating that the days will start to get longer again! I don't like these short days. I feel like hibernating.

we will be having a nice, big bonfire and roast dinner  I have bought half a lamb from someone I know online with a farm - ethically reared snd I'm told totally delicious. part of that will be for dinner with roasted veg, mash, peas, yorky puds..... mmmmmmmm  with something yummy for pudding and some nice fruit juices. and marshmallows for toasting on the fire, kids love them, so does the dog

probably working, but i might try a little candle magic later on, and possibly a ritual in my garden to help everything grow when the weather gets warmer.

I usually celebrate the winter solstice a couple of days after the 22nd - as I find there is usually a bank holiday on the 25th....
we bring in greenery - an evergreen tree, holly, ivy bay etc, and we have special lights and candles, to celebrate the return of the sun. We put up decorations, so the house looks special. we give each other presents, visit with family, and have a big feast, where we have some food that we only have for this festival (for example I make a special steamed fruit pudding)

now I *know* this sounds very similar to that other festival but each to their own.

I will be flinging my 8 month pregnant self around to the clash of bells and sticks, as we Morris dance until we are too cold (or usually too soaked ) then rush into the pub for a...oh, it'll be fruit juice this year :(

A friend of ours came back from a long stay in Japan with a wonderful example of them, er, not quite getting it: a plastic Santa on the cross.

Not quite on topic, but so what.
