How do I get my cat to stop peeing on my couch?

Post: # 202747Post melodyeye »

I have two couches and a chair in my room, and one time my cat got locked in there. She had no choice but to relieve her self on one of the couches and now it seems like every time she has to go she just goes in the same spot on that same couch even if she is not locked in. What do I do?

launder the cushion and cover. spray it with a pet deodorizer and provide a litter tray. It can be a very hard association to break the cat of, trust me i know!

How many litter trays do you have in the house? The rule of thumb is: 1 per cat and then at least an extra one. Even if the cats normally go outside. Keep the trays clean. Make sure the trays are in a place where the cat can go without being interrupted.

First deodorise the spot on the couch with a product that deodorises cat pee. Not ammonia, in any case, nor other strong smelling stuff.

Just put a litter tray on the spot where she pees; so òn the couch. Make sure it is a stable place for her to do her thing. Put something under it so that it doesn't wobble. She must feel welcome to do it in the litter tray. Hopefully that breaks her from the habit to do it on the couch. Live with that for a goodly while (a week?) and then start moving the litter tray gradually (no more than a meter/yard at a time) towards a place where it is more convenient. A the same time yoy could make it inconvenient for her to go on her old spot. Put something else in it's place; a closed box, a stack of hard toys, something wobbly which would't be ruined if the cat still pees on it.

Not sure if it'll work, but that's what I would try.

Whatever you do, don't shout or react in any way when you catch her in the act. She's not being naughty, she is just going to the toilet.

Good luck,
Jandra

while researching for something else, I read that cats detest Rosemary. So maybe not essential oil of but a rosemary 'tea' used in the cleaning water?

I put their food in the place I don't want them to go. Cats hate having their toilet near their food so they go somewhere else. Works for me every time.

I quite agree not to make a fuss. Just keep taking her to where you do want her to go, scratch her paw in the dirt and pop her bottom down. She should get the idea quite quickly.

Jandra said everything I was going to say and it has worked with the various kitty incidences I have had over the years.

Step one - remove smell (ideally replace with unpleasant to cat smell)
Step two - provide tray

I guess the other option is to keep kitty out of that room...

You can use biological washing powder to remove the smell of dog/cat pee....

get rid of the couch

Well my suggestion is, there is a spray you can buy at the pet store (I don't recall the name) that is supposed to repel them. You also might try covering your couch with a sheet of plastic while he is going through this rebellious period as they do not like to pee on their feet. Hope it might work out for you to stop the cat peeing on your couch.

It was spam Ritchie but somehow we never got around to deleting her spammy links. Just left the thread here at the time because it had responses to it.

No I won't use a smiley because I've decided to turn into Boboff, as he's turned all nice all of a sudden. Grumble grumble.
