Hi flowergirl,
Have you tried Real Seeds? They have Sutherland Kale which is a large flat-leaved variety. I got some to try this year. Sadly I have no spare seed but i found the Real Seeds company very good to deal with. All their seeds are bred for the British climate and no F1 hybrids, so they encourage you to save seed from the plants.

I can definitely second the recommendation for Realseeds.
We bought some quinoa seeds from them. None germinated and we thought it was just us not following their instructions properly. They'd had a problem with that batch and sent a replacement packet to everyone (unbidden). You don't get service like that often.
And the Sutherland Kale is good. And the Oca and, and...

Re: old fashioned kale
Did you find the seed you wanted?
Daubenton's Perennial kale is mentioned in permaculture items but is grown from cuttings.
