I need a rat repellant. I'd prefer not to use traps, but will resort to them if I have to. it's getting cold, so we have rats in the lfot again. they're not doing anything wrong up there, expect pooping, weeing and making a general racket but the scratching noise at night is driving me insane.

as they're in the loft, I'd prefernot to use traps purely cos i'd prefer to not have to go creeping round the loft to find them and dispose of them, so is there anything i can use as a deterrant?

I'm pretty sure they're living in a colony under next door's decking

Contact your local Environmental Health dept. If they are coming from next door they can enforce legislation under the Environmental Protection Act to make them deal with it. However, rats come to a food source - are you feeding the birds? Is next door feeding the birds? This is the kind of thing that attracts rats - they don't just go to places because they seem to have a cosy place to live - they go for food first - so stop their food supply and they will go elsewhere.

We had an access problem and couldn't set traps in the required area so, with a great deal of scepticism, we bought a sonic rat/mouse repeller. We have it positioned under the area of the ceiling where the night time scratching was most prevalent and it has appeared to work!! A little more pricey than a trap but you don't have to wander around in the loft!

thanks guys, well the food source seems to be next door's bin I think, ours is metal and tight lol.

cat: not an option. i can't afford the antihistemines lol!

traps: yeah, access is difficult.

Landlord: blames all his problems on us so I'm not even going there.
